Greetings from the Critique Club };-)

Initial thoughts
Very good composition, meets the challenge, great crispness

Composition/ Content

This shot is incredibly crisp and in focus. I would like to know what kind of lens you used to get in this close. Colors are great and the DOF to blur the background is perfect.

Background
As noted, blurred nicely.

Camera Work - Technical
I like what seems to be late afternoon lighting from the right side. Although I generally don't like centered shots this one is right on. I think you did a good job of cropping the pipe at the bottom too.

Digital Processing - Technical
The only thing I would add here is that I think a 5-6 pixel black border may have made the crispness and vibrant colors stand out even more.

Fits The Challenge
Ahhhhh, here is why you may not have won a ribbon this week. Although technically one of the very best shots, the humor aspect was a bit suspect. The title certainly helped but the shot itself was actually a bit sad.

My Opinion On The Photo
I originally scored this shot a six. Any other week I would have scored it much higher, but I like a lot of others apparently were scoring more on humor and less on technical this week. Really nice shot, and keep up the good work.

I would be happy to talk further about this shot if you would like to contact me.

Poor little dude! I guess there's a fine line between funny & sad sometimes... :)

Poor gull. He seems to be making the best of a bad deal.

While I don't think this is particularly humorous because of what probably caused this bird to lose it's leg, I do think its one of the better pictures in terms of photography for this challenge. Great use of DOF, and good focus! I would have maybe cropped down from the top and over from the left a bit... I love the detail you got on this guy with his feathers as well as the rusted pole he's sitting on. Nice job. -8- Good luck!

awwwwwwwww.....poor baby....oh my heart breaks for this poor thing. I hate to think what may have happened, and the pain he suffered.

Very pretty photo. Very sad image.

Funny, yes, but also made me kind of sad. I feel sorry for the poor thing! Great lighting and composition, wonderful DOF, and I love the interest of the rusty rail.

Very interesting subject. I don't feel that you used an older regular picture for this challenge as I usually do when the subject is something like this. The blurred background keeps the shot at a level that isn't distracting and only draws your eye to the bird. Great lighting on the bird too!... 10

That's not funny, that's sad (takes out the violin). :) Don't see much humour in the shot, but I will give you an 8 because it is technically great. NIce and crisp. Just the right depth of field. 8 Jacko.

Poor thing. He looks like he is doing pretty well even without ADA. However I don't think of it as very humorous. Very good picture though. 5

Ya know..... this is a nice photo, execution, focus and colour is dead on. But i just don't find it funny. It's sad. I'm going to go cry now.....
01/14/2003 05:26:22 PM
thats not funny
01/14/2003 08:55:07 AM
Well, at first, it's sad. Then it's kind of funny. lol. Poor thing! I'm wondering "how can he stand on only one leg". Then realized that they stand on one leg most of the time anyway. He looks like he's very used to it by now. Focus and clarity are good. Angle and framing/cropping are good. Lighting appears to have been cooperative for the shot. and I love the background. It's not a solid color, there is just enough variation to make it interesting, however, blurred enough to not make it distracting. Nice job. Good luck in the challenge.

I think this is a great photo. Unfortunately, it's not one bit funny, so I have to mark you down for that. Deformities are never funny, whether it be due to genetics or an accident or a near-been-eaten incident. Of course it could be used for awareness of a certain problem. Anyway, nice shot!

I like the caption. Usually people don't take photographs of birds missing limbs. Also seems like a fairly decent photograph.

too sad to me humorous!
