This is a very nice photo which I found by accident doing a search for something else. I felt the need to register as a basic user simply to correct a mistake seen in many of the comments. This insect is a "she," not a "he" as stated in a number of comments. There are thousands of species of wasps (which include yellowjackets [one word folks], hornets, etc.) in which no males have ever been discovered. For more details on some species of hornets and yellowjackets, see //creatures.ifas.ufl.edu/urban/occas/hornet_yellowjacket.htm .

fascinating, colorful and great impact. The angle adds tension and the detail in the face is just grand. A great capture and a worthy entrant to this contest. Bumping up to 7

This is an interesting depth of field you've created. I like the colors and some of the detail yet some of it seems a bit oversharpened.

Great macro, the only thing I would change is the background, the split colors are a little weird 9

Superb macro. Your ability to shoot at such magnifications and still maintain great compositions is awesome. And as usual, your point of focus is spot on where it couts.

Wow that's close. Way over sharpened though. The halos are clearly visible. It does, however, add to the image in this case.

Excellent marco shot, well done!!! Brilliant clarity here, the colours in the head are amazing. Personally I would have liked more DOF, but may not be possible if he was a moving target! Great shot though!! 9

good close-up, focus is perfectly on the head. I would expect some more detail in the eyes though. Good colors as well.

DOF seems very wonky? Nevertheless great clarity on the face. BG needs to be thought about more.

I like the clarity. the only problem I see is the background which doesn't go that well with this photo.. a cleaner and single colored background.. may be dreen or black would be much better IMO

9. Still not a fan of the bug shots, but every once in a while one will jump out at me (and give me the chills). This one did just that. Having been stung by one of these as a child, they've always had that menacing feel about them. You've captured that perfectly.

I like the background colours in this shot. The cropping and angle is just right. The feet have a white halo, perhaps to much sharpening?

Real good focus...and mixture of colors... interesting compozition aswell.

10/03/2004 07:57:29 AM
The DOF looks a little different than I would expect (especially near the front legs.) It will be interesting to see your notes about whether that was something you added, or if that is due to the angle you chose for the shot. Either way, I want to reach out and kill this before it kills me. Nicely done.

Spectacular macro... the background doesn't quite work for me, it's too distracting especially as the change of colour cuts the hornet in half. Amazingly sharp, very deep dof for a macro such as this. It looks like you selectively blurred the foreground, and it looks a bit odd. 7

nitpick - I can see the pin in it's back.

The wood really shows the DOF. Great detail on the face. If I could vote, I'd give you a 9.

Colours and texture are wonderful and the exposure seems bang on, however the DOF seems a tad too shallow. What is in focus is very sharp. With the angle of the photo I think more DOF would help balance the image between in and out of focus elements. 8

great details on the eyes and manibles. excellent color and texture captured on the front of the face. looks oversharpened to me though, especially by the second leg on the right side.

This is an excellent shot. Interesting composition. Great focus. It doesn't have that I would like to hang this on the wall appeal for me, but that is the only thing missing. 9.

Feels slightly overexposed and oversharpened (second leg from right). But i really like the pose and how the hornet is looking directly at the camera. 7

The detail on the head is great, but I find the pastel colours in the background very dull and they dont suit the subject. I think this would look really good in B&W, because you'll still get the high contrast of the head to make it stand out, and you won't have the icky background colours. 6

THe whitish shine across the eye detracts from the photo in my opinion..It makes the eye appear more out of focus than it really is. How did you get him to sit so still to pose though? Nice macro

Gah.. Shots like this always freak me out completely. Phobia of the things doesn't help. I hate it when they look right AT me.
This looks a little oversharpened. DOF is good, and the composition has a nice aspect to it. Perhaps a little too much negative space in the upper left corner, but nothing too distracting. Most of all, it just makes me shiver.. and that's a good thing. 8

I love when these angled shots really work. This is a great picture. The bug is so clear it looks unreal! I gave it a 9, only because it's so well done, but I really, really really don't like pictures of bugs. They give me the creeps -- but the photography on this is incredible.

Not into bugs but this is a great shot. I like the detail in his... er... face... and the tilted angle really conveys the way these critters can land on any surface. Interesting split-toned background too. DOF seems weird, it looks like there are two planes of focus which is impossible. Have you manually blurred any areas or am I just going mad? 8
