Yup -- This is my Moriarty. He has many nicknames -- Mo is one of them, and my husband likes to call him Mobert. :)

It's difficult to do a cat portrait when you're by yourself.

Ummmm... change that to it's pretty much impossible! I tried it one day and gave up until the next day when I had an assistant.

My son was the mouse handler. We had to find a toy that would interest Mo a little bit -- just a little, because otherwise he'd want to jump after it instead of just looking at it. So we found an old stuffed mouse toy, and hung it from a string, hung from a broomstick. And my son would swing it in front of Moriarty.

Sometimes he was interested. The other times, he'd jump off the table and wander someplace else. Mo doesn't have the longest attention span... :)

I was really excited to try this challenge. I always wanted to try a real Mo portrait instead of the accidental ones.

Done with one flash to Mo's right with a lumiquest softbox (one of the velcro around the flash ones) and a flash behind with a diffuser for a really light hair light.

The interesting thing is: this looks really nice at night, but underexposed during the day. I assume that I should have processed this during the day instead of at night. It's interesting how different it looks.

Here are two unedited outtakes. I'm really pleased that I actually got this close on the lighting. There may be hope for me and flash after all! :)

and then there's this one :)

Thanks for all the wonderful comments!

Oh -- one last thing -- I really wish we could have a larger size. I worked on this on a larger size, and really liked having more negative space around it, but when I shrunk it to 800, it just didn't work. If you want, open this one, and then click "view full-sized image"

Doesn't the negative space look nice on the larger size?

Ah well. Such are the vicissitudes of life. :)

I thought I've seen the pussycat before, but the title mislead me.
I equally like the outtakes, especially the last one where he shows his claws so well.
When Wendy pushes the release button, she pushes him well.
Congrats Wendy

Ha! The previous image was a dog. Wendy? If this is Moriarty, you have done him proud. If it's not, this could be Moriarty :-)
