The Very Large Array radio telescope is built on ranch land, so you often see cattle grazing near the antennas. A story I was told by one of the original folks working there was that the antennas used to have red lights on them so the array operator could see them somewhat in the dead of night (it is DARK there -- I know, I worked there!). However, the rancher said that the red lights spooked his cows and that they weren't giving milk properly, so the red lights had to be extinguished, so they were. True or not? You decide...
