Photographer’s Notes I am not a hard core gamer … in fact since my son was into Zelda on the original Nintendo cartridge system, I have hardly played computer games at all.
But he is now the Global Franchise Manager for Guildwars 2 at ArenaNet and he gave me a copy of the game for Christmas. I have played it multiple times and multiple hours a week since then and have a certain competency that comes from advancing my Asura Thief character to level 63 (as of last night).
This is a visually stunning game. It is PG rated without the sex, drugs, and violence associated with so many of today’s games. And it is vastly entertaining.
Post Challenge: Just got back in town and have been dealing with some flooding due to a recent gully washer rain storm. As a result, I just saw that it placed 5th. Thanks for the positive votes and comments. Much appreciated. i didn't expect it to score this well but am happy it resonated with many of you.
Post Processing Rather than describing the PSCS5 editing, let me describe the broader approach to creating this image.
• Step 1: Photograph a laptop against a black background. Isolate the image in PSCS5.
• Step 2: Photograph some screens for Guildwars 2. That is, photograph my Mac Pro Display while it was displaying Guildwars 2 scenes.
• Step3: Crop, distort and size one Guildwars 2 image and layer it ontop of the laptop image so it looks like the laptop is displaying it.
• Step 4: Crop another Guuildwars 2 scene for the background. Put a partially transparent white layer over it. Blur it. Use an OnOne filter to create a grunge vignette. Merge these layers and effects and place the result behind the laptop image.
• Step5: Photograph an action figure from the Guildwars 2 Master Edition. Isolate it, size it, and place it so it looks like it is emerging from the screen. Darken and mask blur the left part of the image so it matches the scene it is emerging from.
I am not very good at this but it was fun and the result is about 80% of what I had hoped for.
The stupid DPC size maximum of 800 pixels is a crime against nature. I wish you could see this full size!!!

This photo sets a very important mood IMHO. The background almost gives the impression that the gammer is already in the world which he or she is playing, and in most cases the one playing the game is so caught in action of the game they are in spirit. So to have the monster come out of the game into their reality makes a bold statement of the involvement one has while playing some games. The photo itself was very well done and the editing was well done.
I have two favorites in this challenge and this is one of them...
Really cool how you got the 3d to pop out of the laptop. would love to know how you done this.
