This is my first contribution to this competition. I shot this on the way home from work when fog just started accumulating around everywhere. I adjusted the levels and Hue/Saturation in PS a little and ended up with this awry kind of photo. I hope you like it, I do!

If I went back in time and commented on this, I would say "Give it up, you'll never make it in this business" - but I would go back and say that to all the best photogs on DPC, then the ribbons would be MINE. MINE, I tell ya! :)

But since I can't go back in time, I'll be honest and say this is really a fantastic shot. A few times I tried to do foggy shots, I found it is not as easy as it would seem to make them come out right. I'd also like to comment on the title, which may be an intentional or unintentional play on a common phrase: "Road to Forgiveness" - which is what I thought it said at first glance. :)

Good luck on DPC, you'll probably do well here. :P

Critique Club Comment:

For your first entry, you have chosen a very nice shot! This is a great find, and I glad you happened upon it so you could share it with us.

I like the balance of the shot. From the tree on the left that brings me into the frame, from the road with it's great texture that takes my eyes back to the top to the little tree on the right, and then back out of the frame. You might have tried moving the entry of the road to the lower left leading to the middle of the frame, but that's a personal choice.

The fog rolling across the road had a very calm feel to it. It makes me wonder what is on the other side? Make me feel curious, not anxious. Very nice. The amount of the white at the top is not over powering, as it has a softness to it.

Your conversion to black and white is well done. You have great detail in the branches and the pebbles in the road.

I like this shot, glad you shared it with us, I hope to see more of your work.

Great tones and lighting in this. I like how you've centered the road and it kind of just disappears.

I love the tones in this image. I like the sillohuette of the trees as well. The only thing I'm not too crazy about is the horizon near the center of the frame. Cropping out a little on the bottom would offset your horizon a little, adding balance to the photo (IMHO). Still a great shot and I give it an 8! Good luck in the challenge.

I like the composition... too bad the most noticeable horizon appears almost half-way but at least you composed around the tree. The rise in the road is a nice touch.

I like your idea, as if the road just disappears. Is this black and white? Sorry to ask, but the blue-ish (almost purple) tint makes me wonder......7 Swash

while I first rated your submission not so high, on the second look it apears to me as beeing very good. When I rushed through the pictures I didn't notice the nice texture of the road and how it's bended. Also the asymmetric framing by the trees on the left and the bush on the right is good: the small bush gives way to allow the viewer to get a view to the hill behind the fog. This hill could have been more visible if you would have increased the contrast though or reduce the brightness. Still very good and fitting to the challenge topic.

Not sure about the tinting... the natural color may have done better justice to this one.

Beautiful color/tone. Nice composition. I especially love how the ridge in the background is just peeking out of the fog.

A little too purple for my taste. The fog looks cool. Good luck!

Great shot. it seems a tad fuzzy though... could just be from the fog, but might be the focus slightly... a sharpen filter might have fixed that. Overall I like this shot a lot. well done.

Driving from West to East England last year we went thru many fog banks like this one. Great photo opportunity! Good stuff.

A little less road would have made this better in my view, but think its good.

You probably drive on this road everyday, yet somehow you've captured a unique and beautiful moment. The mountains in the background really sell this photo... reveals that there are things back behind the fog. The fog also splits this photo into two... against the rule of thirds. But it still seems balanced, although you could have cropped out some of the road and still be effective. I see lots of purple... gives me a sense of the cold. Well done! You should be proud of this one. (9)
