Did a comparison of my Downy Woodpecker and your Hairy Woodpecker and it is really hard to tell the difference but when I looked them up in my books I could see the bars on the white tail feathers that you spoke of - also found out the Hairy is much shyer than the Downy and overall much larger too - thanks for the education on these birds. Nice shot by the way.
