Nicely captured. It's definitely hard to tell the two species apart unless you have a common frame of reference to compare size or you are as well-studied as Richard is! |

Thanks for the correction to Downy - I always get these two mixed up. I even looked it up in my field guide to decide which type it was. |

I think this is the downy woodpecker as well. These guys don't stay still long, it's a great capture. |

While you may be right about this being a Hairy, I think it may be a Downy WP, male. Hairy WPs are generally bigger and the beak of a Hairy is as long as his head dimension. A Downy WP's beak is less than it's head size, which is the case of this bird. The other field mark indicating Downy is the dark bars on the white tail feathers. The Hairy has "all white" feathers in the same place. Excellent photo! |
