Very good macro shot. Great details of the wings and most of the body. Overal feel is a bit dark although contrast of the wings seems to be very good. 6

Nice touch up on the photo, ot enhances it up by a point or two! Not easy to get them to hold still is it!

Beautiful shot. I like the detail you can see in the wings. The only thing that I might change, is that I would have the whole butterfly in sharp detail. Just a little wider dof. Great work and good luck.

A very nice macro shot, a closer crop might be more powerful, though I do like the inclusion of his natural habitat.

Sharp and good DOF.

stunning detail. this is green as nature intended it. perhaps there is just a bit missing to make this a trule compelling shot, the composition or "focus zones" may seem a bit unnatural or... artificial.

Good capture and contrast against the bright green leaves 9

Somehow the blur in the background - especially on the left is disturbing me. But the lady is a beauty :)

A very nice macro - well exposed and perfectly composed. DoF is ok - not much you can do with shots like this. The green seems a bit off-color to me.

Nice capture. The lady really pops out.

A very lovely specimen, however, I want to see both wings sharp and yes, I know that these are very difficult shots, but I would have hung around and come back until I got one with wings closer. This is not to say that your effort is a failure. The colors are great and the foliage has a pastoral feel. The black and orange with white is jyst great. Bumping to 6

Good use of shallow DOF to emphasize the butterfly. The colors seem a little strange, but it's hard to tell if that's because of the subject or because of an artifact of post-processing. The sharp wing and leaf detail really make this one pop.

Love this image.. nice colors, good use of DOF, worth framing and hanging on the wall!

crisp, clean, nice DoF. Might have cropped a little tighter around the butterfly on the left.

A beautiful shot! Would like to see more detail in some spots, but I would also be very happy if I were able to do this well!

Great contrast, and the small depth of field looks perfect with this.
The colors are great. 7

The green seems a bit toooo green here. still, a nice bug macro -5

nice depth of field on the butterfly. I wish there was a little more space between the insect and the leaf in the lower corner.

This is a decent bug shot, but in this competition, I think there are one or two that are stronger. Hope you do OK in the voting.

Nice close up. Too bad your depth of field wasn't deeper to bring the back wing into focus. I think I would have tried to get more legs in the shot with just two being prominant the butterfly looks a littl odd. 5

Very nice color and DOF is excellent. I think the image on the whole could be a bit brighter, especially the wings. 6

A very well taken photo, but looks more like a recording achievement rather than something one would want to spend ages looking at.

Attractive shot, nice and sharp. Not sure about the composition though... it looks like you were trying to centre the head but didn't quite manage it. The background is too cluttered to make this a really 'wow' shot. It would be great if all the wing was in focus. Great colours. I would have gone for a much tighter crop. 7

Nice close up of this interesting butterfly. Almost looks like its face is turned toward the camera with a frown on it! Nature shots are never boring.

Looks a little flat to me. A little bit of curves would go a long way on this image I think.

I'd like to see more detail on the insect. Maybe a different angle to show the face. It's beautiful colors really grab my attention though, but it seems also a little dark. 6

I'm sorry but I don't find this very interesting. It isn't a bad photo but it looks like a normal butterfly photo to me (4).

Very nice although I must admit that it lacks the "zip" of some of the other shots in the challenge.
10/01/2004 02:37:06 PM
I wish the whole butterfly was in focus. probably a difficult task to ask for, but with the upper wings out of focus, it almost makes it look like a bad editing job, where you blurred the background and oops, must have gotten the upper wing accidently. I know this is probably not the case, but my first impression when I see it. Focus on the rest of the bfly is nice. lighting is good, and background contains no distracting elements. Overall nice, but not extraordinary. ~Heather~

I would have liked a little more DOF, to keep the antennae and legs in focus, but not a major problem

I am going to be critical (well I usually am anyway). I like the shot but think it could have been better. I like the colors and details of the butterfly and the soft green undistracting surroundings. But the butterfly is in the perfect position to get full sharpness and in your image the top of the wings and the top of the antenna is outside the depth of field. You were probably limited from using a smaller aperture due to low light (I don't see sunny highlights or flash) but I am making my comments anyway.

The green colour looks a bit unnatural to me. I think tweaking the green channel in post processing would help. I would also adjust the levels a bit so that the white on the wings is brighter. 6

nice pic, can't help but feel that the focus could be sightly better, the near wing is perfect but the depth of focus seems to include the leaves in the foreground rather than being a little further back and getting the rear wing also. I realise that this could well be just an illusion as the leaves are on the same plane as the near wing

This is a great photo I just wish the whole wing was in focus, I still like it alot...8
