6/52: First photo on the macro. Not horrible but I can see this will be a journey. :D

I actually didn't even realize the spider was there until I got back home and uploaded.

I like the buds and spider (noticed it even before I read your comment) and the DOF is great. Agree with HarveyG about the use of space. But keep on with this, I think your lens is very good for this kind of photography.

Learning to do macro well will help all of your shooting, especially that long lens you're getting. The closer you are to something, the more important keeping the lens still and getting critical focus becomes, because DOF becomes much shallower than what you're used to, and every movement of the camera is multiplied. Getting good with up close with the macro lens will help when you get the long lens, because you'll face many of the same issues with the long lens, and the long lens will be really heavy, compounding the problem. An added bonus is that VR and autofocus don't work well at macro distances.

So anyway, a tripod will help, as will some practice shooting at something using different aperture settings, and using autofocus, manual focus, and live view. You're off to a good start.

Very pretty buds and lucky find with the spider. If I may suggest I'd crop off the annoying and eye catching pruned branch. There is too much space on left side and if possible I'd give more space to the right as the buds are leaning to the right.

Pretty cluster of rose buds - must be warmer where you live than it is here. The spider is a lovely surprise.

I have been doing macro shots for a couple years and I have discovered I don't have the patience for them! I have done some focus stacking which I thought turned out great, but they take a lot of work, but the rewards can be great too. Good luck on your new journey. The macro world is a very interesting place for sure.
