Experimenting with closer than 1:1 macro. This is probably about 1.4:1. Handheld, at minimum focus with a 1.4x teleconverter, flash, and cheap flash diffuser.

I sat on a rock, and focused by focusing at minimum focus distance, then as it swooped into and out of focus as I breathed, I'd fire off a shot every time I passed the focus point.

I love that the D800 doesn't blow out the yellows and reds.

I can picture you sitting on this rock. The weather looks nice enough, so it wasn't a punishment. You were just fully absorbed by theis min-universe of a tiny flower that reveals more detail every time you look. And a great result to take home!

Very well done esp for a hand-held macro. You must have a steady hand. The crisp detail is beginning to show the potential of the D800. Some day I hope to upgrade but for now I've already too many camera bodies.

I love macro and this is a beautiful shot. I suppose you "could" crop in as MattO suggested, but I quite like to see the "whole picture". I must say, I am impressed that you can hand hold the macro shot. I have tried often, but have given up on that now.

Yes, I'm sure I could. This was essentially the full frame, and the stamen were quite sharp. The flower, including petals was about 1 cm across.

Lovely image and especially knowing you did this handheld. I like the composition of that folded petal, almost framing (partially) those stamens(?). Great colours as well.

Very nice focus, Ann. What I love best is that center bottom petal - great textures on its backside and its shape is like a cup of gold. Lovely.
