For me this was more an excercise in lighting than anything else. Especially since I don't own any photographic lighting equipment (even an an on board flash). I used two 500w tungsten light which I positioned about 10m from her with one facing the ceiling and the other at the opposite wall. I liked the way it provided light for the left side of her face with enough seepage to not have all of her right side in shadow.
I only had about 10 mins to set up and take the shots so I possibly could have done better but I was not to unhappy with the result. Some expected criticisms are the low POV, the dirty window and distractions of the window frame. But to me this adds elements of interest. I do not expect this to compare well against the expected professionally set up portraits.
The only changes I made to the camera was to set the Picture Style to Monochrome and the White Balance to Tungsten. And of course the only PP involved Shapen, resize and Sharpen. Thanks goes to my daughter who took off 10mins from her selective school entrance test studies for me to get this shot. I hope some feel it was worth it.
Something interesting (and annoying) occurred with the PP of this image. When I copy the images from my CF card to my windows computer the raw files automatically rotate for portrait orientation but not the jpgs. Because I have to use the jpg I rotated in PS. Once I downloaded into to Workshop and then transferred to the challenge all appears normal on my computer. When I viewed my entry on my iPad the thumbnail appears normal but when I open the image the entry was rotated to landscape! And even weirder, the image in workshop was at portrait but she was in landscape - stretched and compressed to fit! When I checked on my Android phone everything was normal but on my wife's iPhone the same issues were there as my iPad. It seams to be something to do with Apple products. I would be great if someone could explain this. To fix this I rotated the image before opening in PS using the Window Picture Viewer (a copy of the original jpg as I know this can affect the EXIF data). I'm sure I would have lost a lot of votes from Apple users if I hadn't found this.
