Got this toxic little feller (also know as the Milkweed Locust) during a birding tour. Sometimes looking near your feet also reveals interesting things. Shot with my "birding lens" the Sigma EX DG 100-300mm f/4 as I had no time to change lenses to something "more" suitable; a philosophy I try teach students; use what you've got with you and understand how it works under any shooting situation. In this case the smooth BG is grass and is this studio like because of the long lens :) I like minimalism and applied that with the framing this time. Perhaps too much?

Subtle PP, masked, Topaz Labs DeNoise, some sharpening, slight +Saturation, crop, sfw.

Any comment or critique; complimentary or critical are welcome and appreciated. Questions about gear, technique etc. also welcome.

First thing I noticed what what Alice mentioned - the "arms" wrapped around the stem. Don't know how I thought they held on, but this surprised me. I hate grasshoppers - but he's kinda cute :)

No birds this week!!!!
Well, birds have to eat too, and this grasshopper looks like a nice meal.
Excellent detail including those 'arms' wrapped around the stem.
Showed me something I had not seen before.

I like the blank BG, I think a BG filled with grass or other things would take away from the dude. Gosh, really great work with catching this with your long lens! The details come through very nice.

Great creatures, insects. I like the even background without any detail in which the grasshopper nicely stands out. I recognize that the focal plane is slightly to the front, but I must compliment you on the catchlight in the eye. Did you use flash for this?

I really do like the minimalist approach with all the negative space. I agree with Maggie, it was very nice of him to arrange himself all on the same focal plane. It is too bad he couldn't be a bit sharper, but better to get this guy like this than to miss him because you're switching to a macro lens.

Lovely, how the grasshopper looks like he's trying, unsuccessfully, to hide from you. I think I wish the eyes were sharper - your focus seems to be on the legs, in front of the eyes, and the eyes look slightly out of focus. In this photo I like the mostly plain, out of focus, background.

Wonderful detail int his little guy - did you stack it or was he kind enough to be all on one plane? Although I think you would have put it in your notes. I really like the shade of green he is and it's complimented well by the b/g - great find, very well done - right down to a catch light in a bugs eye :)
