 trying to get the light of one candle to illuminate the smoke trail of the other candle.

This might have been better if you had reversed which candle was in front, so that the flame of the one that stayed lit wouldn't be cut in half. I agree with having the snuffer extend past the first frame and more into the picture, the image would be too unbalanced if it only reached a little way into the image.
