Sanchez is a very large Red-tailed Boa who has been at the animal shelter since August 1. He's still there; I just checked. It's difficult to find someone to adopt a big snake. I wouldn't, mostly because he would find my rabbits delicious and I don't think you can teach a snake that other house pets are out of bounds. Also ... I can't bear the thought of feeding one animal to another. In the wild the prey has some chance to escape. Not so much in a glass enclosure. Just can't do that.

In this shot Sanchez was out with his favorite caretaker, Teresa. She is pretty much the only one who actually likes snakes, and apparently the feeling is mutual. We posted a few of the shots on Facebook hoping to entice someone to adopt him. He is very friendly towards people and easy to handle. But no takers. Poor Sanchez.

love the smile - not sure I would be doing that with a snake wrapping around my neck....

I love snakes! I've only ever owned one, and it was a mistake. Not only for the reasons you state. Feeding him was a nightmare for me. But he also was not friendly and was rather aggressive. We had a Burmese python that we were given when the previous owners had a baby and worried for it's safety. We stuck a couple mice in with him when we got him. They tormented the snake for about a month. We were worried he wasn't eating, but actually ended up naming the mice. Came home from work one day and the mice were gone. I cried. The snake left.

It is hard to give a snake personality, but you've done just that. I do like snakes. But like you, I'd never want to feed one. (And for those of you who have never touched one, they feel really cool. Literally, cool to the touch and suprisingly smooth. Try it!)

I'm glad Sanchez has someone who likes him - I would hold him but would not take him home :) Nice framing, Mary. I like Teresa's smile and the way she and Sanchez seem by the angles of their heads to be communicating.

I've only seen boas in zoos. Good photo. It's the snake skin to human skin contact which evokes a primal response.

Cool but I'd never let a snake crawl on me! LOL
