Belted Kingfisher, male, Megaceryle alcyon.

I do not pretend that this is any kind of good photo. While these guys choose conspicuous perches and hover over streams and ponds, they are very shy. I am never able to get close. This wasn't close. This is one species I'll try harder to photograph next Spring.

The image is cluttered with sticks. The feather detail is not great because of the extreme crop. Very weak eye catch glint. Sometimes, though, we take bird photos because of the thrill of the hunt and the sighting of an interesting species.

I understand the thrill of the hunt. Hopefully you will get more opportunities for these guys next year. Love that spiky head.

Totally agree about being thrilled to have a recognizable shot of something I stalked, even if it's not a really good image. It's always a thrill to get a great shot, but part of the fun of nature photography (for me) is in the time spent watching critters in their own world.

I think we all enjoy shooting, even if the results aren't always the best. I know I use my "library" as it were as just a pictoral diary of sorts.

How cool is that! I have never seen one, and to get anything at all is a great find. Thanks for sharing!

Who cares if everything is not perfect. The fact you got a photograph of one is awesome. I think these birds are pretty neat. Awesome :)

Reading your notes, that's exactly how I feel. Sometimes I post pictures that aren't very good just because I'm proud I found and/or caught the subject in the first place! LOL! Love their long beaks!

We don't see them here but I saw one once in a nature preserve in New Mexico - he was in the open but I didn't have the equipment to get a good photo. Quite a thrill, though. I'm not great (at all!) at identifying birds, but this guy's head and neck are pretty unmistakable.

I know what you mean about the elusiveness of this bird. The best shots I have ever gotten have been while in flight and they weren't good at all. Thanks for revisiting this cool Kingfisher!
