love the stark colors and use of the empty space of the sky.

Ah, herons :-) Such great subjects, and you always do them justice. There was a rookery fairly close to here but they've drained the lake to work on the dam. Somehow I think the birds will find another nesting area this Spring. Maybe I'll get lucky and it will be in decent camera range!

I do like the high key nature of these bird shots you're posting.

It always seems so strange to me to see these huge birds up in trees on what seem like thin branches. These birds are uncommon here and I've only ever seen them when I've been away.

Wow you are the queen when it comes to taking photos of birds. I drool over all your bird photos. Absolutely beautiful.

Nice use of the rule of three! As Richard said, the featureless sky is no problem due to the interest of the subject.

Very fine example of a rookery. There are a few of these on the front range, but none in the mountains. Always amazing to me to see the social behavior of birds. You have some outstanding images here. Bright overcast eliminates the blown highlights and blocked up shadows on the birds, but leaves the background featureless, which is okay in this situation because you have such interesting subject.

You have some great shots here. I like this one for the sense of overall setting it gives us, but this close-up is great, too
