No setup involved here, and I don't know if the lady saw me or not. I was visiting Sorrento on a cruise, saw this woman and her kids sitting on the steps, and managed to sneak a couple photos. I did feel bad afterwards and thought I should have gone back and given her some money. There were a LOT of shoppers on the street so that's why she was probably holding her hand out. But I thought this was a pretty powerful image so I wasn't going to delete it, and figured when I got back I'd share it here, and maybe see how well it scored.

Thanks for the comments!

I'm going through the entries, stopping at those images I feel have had the benefit of an unconventional eye and dwelling a little longer to try to see and appreciate what you saw. This is one of those images.

Positives: A brave image to confront us with for sure. The world is cruel and we are crueller. Anybody feeling uncomfortable about this image needs to wake up and reflect. You are brave too - you will have struggled with a sense of guilt and of notions of exploitation but that's the cost of creating journalism - which this most certainly is. Photographically, it is highly competent but of course that doesn't really matter.

Critical stuff: Most of the above.

Overall: Thank you for showing, thank you for reminding, thank you for offering a sense of perspective, thank you for not sticking your head in the sand and moving on.

Not sure if this is setup or not, but either way quite convincing.
