Challenge: Street Photography V (Advanced Editing VII)
Camera: Nikon D800
Lens: Nikon AF-S Nikkor 16-35 f/4 ED VR
Location: Melbourne Australia
Date: Aug 20, 2012
Date Uploaded: Aug 26, 2012

THE IMAGE: Was taken on a photographic city shoot with my friends Phil Moir and JJ. We were out and about doing some night cityscapes to learn our craft. We stumbled across the elephant, one of 50 in the city at the moment. I took a quick snap only to realise there was a man looking my way. He said, "now you'll have to find the other 49!" I wasn't really shooting for this challenge, but thought it made a great shot.

I would have liked the elephant further left and to have not trimmed the top of that building, but that's street photography, sometimes there is no time to pre-compose.

Shot RAW which is not common for me. I usually shoot JPEG. Am leaning towards more RAW these days.

I am sure there will be many B and W's, as well as street and homeless people in this collection. I wanted something different.

THE EDIT: Cropped. Some detail added by the clarity slider in ACR, then a bunch of adjustment layers for colour and contrast and hdr etc. in PS CS6. I wanted an almost other-worldly look with lots of mood which I think I achieved. The D800 and this lens is a spectacular performer.

No sharpening at all. I also love the graininess and colour of the final image. I also like the vignetting that happened naturally with the lens on this image.

THE PREDICTION: I hope top 10?

I second the Mr. Bean theory. You have hit on the essence of dramatic, story based street photography, humans interacting with strange and wonderful environments.

I was one of your 10's... Really loved this shot and was my pick for the blue. You are right that there were a load of black ad white as usual, it was nice to see such a splash of colour in this shot. A shame you missed the top 10.

Fantastic photo. The third color photo in the rankings, counts for something in my opinion! Is this HDR though?

This challenge is awash with Melbournians... great colour and juxtaposition of statue and man. Processing has created some haloing, which will hurt with the voters... also feel the crop, both top and bottom is going to cost you some points in the end... might have been worth your while to get on the ground and get the whole building in the background.

Over the top processing but gotta love the guy's pose as it seems a reverse to that of the elephant.
