Ha! I've done this myself on occasion. I have a few shots that I've liked, but more often I'm left frustrated at the shot I knew I missed due to sheared heads or what have you. This works much more consistently if you can set your focus to manual after selecting your aperture and hyperfocal distance. This way, your camera needn't focus on the scenes around it really.

I know the feeling :) Nice hip shot, but not a very good one for a challenge.

There was a thread not to long ago which linked here. Reading that and eventually building up the courage to not give a crap about people's reactions, I now pull my camera out right beside people and fire away.
