So I did a bit more research and found out that the reason it was hard to identify this one by the markings is because it is most likely a hybrid of not only the American Black and Mallard, but also an endemic species called the Hawaiian Duck.

The island of Kauai is the only place you can find pure Hawaiian Ducks but on Oahu, they've hybridized with the others.

I respect what Karen is seeing, but I'd point to the whitish tail feathers. Soooo..... because we are seeing conflicting field marks, let me suggest this is an American Black Duck x Mallard hybrid adult male. They can hybridize. I'm pretty sure this is a hybrid, because it fits neither of the pure species perfectly.

This one definitely looks like an American Black Duck, male.
