Well, I certainly don't know for sure. But, I think this looks more like a House Finch than a Purple Finch. There is variation within species. This bird has a curved culmen vs. a slightly curved culmen on a Purple Finch. The wings are brownish with indistinct streaks. A Purple Finch (male) would have reddish wings with indistinct streaks. My guess is House Finch. But, I am not an authority. The House Finch is ubiquitous in 48 states, southern Canada and Mexico. The Purple Finch is mostly East half of US, summering in Canadian provinces from Atlantic to Pacific. Excellent photo!!!!! |
