 This interesting critter landed on the outside of my patio-door window, allowing me to get quite close with the macro settings and photograph his belly-side. The body and leg structure was similar to a mosquito but I know it's not a mosquito. Anyone know what he is?

You are right! It does look like an adult male mosquito. I know you have already heard this but the detail in that eye is captivating :) I will look him up and see if I can find out what he is :)

Fairly good macro, especially given the (estimated) size of these. 70% sure this is a type of Crane Fly (Tipulidae), possibly a Tiger Crane Fly:

More info & some good photographs at BugGuide.Net. It may also be a Limoniid Crane Flies (Limoniidae) or a Tipula Yamatotipula , you can 'decide'. edit:wording
