Challenge: Free Study 2012-02 (Advanced Editing VII)
Camera: Canon EOS-5D Mark II
Lens: Canon EF 500mm f/4L IS USM
Location: Snaffles Yard
Date: Feb 20, 2012
Aperture: 5.0
ISO: 500

Date Uploaded: Feb 23, 2012

Snaffles had a bird feeder by the house. So I got a chunk of wood and planted it in the ground. This gave a better landing perch, for the nuthatch. They would work down it's side. Eventually jumping to the sewit, positioned in the feeder. I was positioned, in a make shift blind. Roughly 12 feet away. Partial walls of snow and a cloth roof, gave great cover. So it was just a waiting game. Natural light was from the right. A large reflector was left and low roughly 6 feet away. This was critical, as the bird was actually in shadow. For next time, I am trying close ups. Going for the feather detail. Stacking extension tubes and the 1.4x teleconverter. Should be interesting to see, with the 500mm.

So it appears it has been a slow month. So expecting around mid 5 or so.
I can't wait, till the spring migration! I need more active, interesting subjects!
Come back soon birds, please!

A Nuthatch :-). Cool little birds, especially when they scamper down a tree head first. Very nice detail here.

Terrific focus, depth of field and light. I like the composition, too, which I find slightly whimsical but nicely balanced. Is it a bit over-sharpened around the head and over the top of the beak? A top pick for me.

Ha! My friend and I jokingly call all the nuthatches we see "antigrav birds." This illustrates that well.
