a vulture next door. the shot was overexposed, so I used curves to darken and add contrasts. I dodged and burned his face to bring that out more. B/W was just a simple desaturation.

Wasn't me, honest :P I liked the shot (7) and it's definitely grainy but that's a Don editing technique :)

Some like the donut BG (circle of confusion), others mostly don't so I try avoid it. The masking, Gaussian Blur is one way to subdue it because you have to shoot high ISO to get decent s/s but I use masking/de-noise more as I try avoid the specular highlights at time of shot. Here's two examples:

Was this done with a mirror lens/ Those circles of confusion are very telling.

I don't know if it's the background... or the bird... but there's something not quite there for me. I think it could be an amazing shot... but there was something missing. Maybe someone with more experience could help?

bokeh is a give away to whos this is going off the image a week thread.... it does distract on this pic as the feather detail is minimal on my screen, checked on other mac as well

I don't know if its your editing, but that is the most garish bokeh I've seen. It reminds me of bacteria colonies on a petri dish.
I'd try selecting the vulture for the sharpening on one layer, then applying a gaussian blur on the background bit.
