So my weathered challenge was my second entry, and I'm not complaining AT ALL about the score. It reached the goal that I wanted (top 10) but I'm wondering what I've could've done to make it a ribbon winner.

From the comments, I wont be using a fading border again haha. I'm very iffy about any borders now.

for me, it was the border, i liked the angle of this as we saw more vehicles in this challenge from the front angle

I have to agree I liked the image but that border... Maybe either no border or a thin black sold border mite have gone better...

This is like trying to get into the minds of DPC voters which is impossible -- but ...

Most of the top images had a "sky" in them which is sort of a harbinger for "weather". They also had a loneliness or desolate quality to them which people may associate with weathered. I think the subject and colors and contrasts in your image are great. Perhaps a more desolate atmosphere with more "weather" (e.g. sky) might have pushed it up a bit. I'm not sure about an angle from behind either, that might push a few votes lower but it's a personal preference. Ribbon winners are usually universally interpreted as "the right angle", etc.

All in all, who cares what I think but that's my attempt at an interpretation of the challenge results. If you look at the results I had in my first few challenges, I was nowhere near top 10 so you're well on your way to quick success here.

David, not to be a skunk, but I'm surprised your entry wasn't disqualified for adding a vignette. Maybe it's okay if it's part of the border.

Anyway, as for your original question, realize that asking "How can I win a ribbon?" is a different question than "How can I improve my photo?" ( Brad had a good quote about the folly of using DPC voters to determine one's talent -- wish I could remember it exactly.)

I'm not trying be like "oh I just want good scores and that's it." But a great scores only comes with an amazing image. What I'm asking really, is how can I improve my work. Which goes side by side when getting a good score.

If you read the description of the picture, you can tell that I did not use any vignette. Just a border (to be honest I didn't know how to make it solid so I left it like that.)

I'm thinking some people here misunderstood the word weathered. But oh well, I can't complain. There was a fence around the truck so I was very limited on what angles I could use. All the angles from the front were super tight even using a wide angle. But I'll definitely keep the angle of view in my mind.

Also thanks for the encouragement, I picked up my DSLR about a month ago, and have big hopes haha. I'm hoping I can learn a lot from this site then maybe make a career out of this.

Lesson learned from this challenge: FADING BORDERS = BAD haha

Here's my take for what it's worth.

I really like the shot. As mentioned, the angle from slightly behind is different, and to me, works well.

However, for me to give a shot a top score, not only does the angle and color have to be perfect, but the mood has to fit squarely with the challenge. In a way, the sunlight on the door gives things an upbeat note as does the lush greens in the foreground. Personally, I don't think it's a bad take on "weathered" but I think a bit more muted colors and a more foreboding look may have made it score higher for me.

Again, this is merely speculation and my opinion.
