If anyone is torn between these two monitors, the following photos may help you make a decision. The E248WFP is Dell's 'entry' widescreen panel (view here). The E2408WFP is the upgraded 'ultra sharp' widescreen panel (view here) Both are 24" and have a maximum resolution of 1920x1200.

I initially bought the E248 as I thought 'it can't be that bad'. And generally, its not, but I wasn't satisfied with it for photography work. I upgraded to the E2408 but for the moment have both until I get a shipping label from Dell to return the E248 so I thought I'd take some comparisson shots of the monitors' performance.

For these shots, the exposure was locked at ISO400, f/7.1, 1/60. The camera is a D200 with a 17-55 f/2.8 lens focused on the E248 for each shot (my intent isn't to compare sharpness but color shift). White balance was set to 5000K for each shot. The monitors are tilted slightly towards each other - this position was unchanged throughout. Contrast on both was set to 50, brightness on both was set to 75; the E248 was set to "Multimedia" preset, the E2408 to "Desktop" preset (these produced a similar image for the front view and are the settings I used on the E248 and will likely use on the E2408). Color saturation was left at the preset defaults. Resolution was set to the maximum 1920x1200. Video card is a 512MB ATI HD3870 - both monitors connected via DVI. The E248 is on the left and the E2408 is on the right. The 'spot' on the E2408 is the mouse cursor. This isn't too scientific a test but I think the results speak for themselves (i.e. I'll be keeping the E2408):

I swear by dell ultrasharp monitors and would get no other (a mac maybe). Plus I cant conclude anything from the pics u posted. I could see the difference when i compared the nonultra with the ultra in the past.

Go ultra, u wont regret it.

Thanks so much for sharing the comparison Maverick! I've been in the market for a 24" monitor as well and was strongly considering the Ultrasharp 2408. However, after doing a lot of research I've discovered a potentially better monitor: the Doublesight DS-263N. This monitor may be $70 more expensive than the dell ultrasharp, but it is an IPS panel, which is far superior for photo editing than the PVA panel used by the ultrasharp 2408 (which is far superior to the TN panel used by the non-ultrasharp 248). If you are seriously confused right now, this is a great article you should read - go to the "primer" section and also read the "Panel Types" section.

After 3 weeks of researching, I've concluded (along with many other people) that the best bang-for-your-buck 24/26" IPS monitor out there right now is definitely the DS-263N. There's a great thread about it here.

I hope this helps. I'm certainly excited about getting a new monitor soon!
