Have any of you ever considered joining to form a really GOOD macro stock site that could be exclusive for DPC members??

We could call it something else... would need a snappy name though. Only recruit here... we have plenty of members from all over (more than enough to keep it well stocked with images) so buyers would not be left wanting.

ETA: Not prints! LOL That would be left on DPC of course! :)

why not?

Well, yes, we could... but my school of thought is to have it run by the DPCers themselves and therefore they get the most profit. Not having to pay 20% off the top of the sell price.

I'm actually looking in to setting up a stock site right now. Not that I expect to make money from stock sales ('tho that would be cool), it is more for making my travel photography tax deductable.

I'm expecting to spend around $2,0000 setting it up.

HOLY MOLY!! That's a LOT!! Are you having to hire a designer?? If so, you might check elance.com and get the lowest bid :)

I have advantage, I am married to a computer geek guru :)

2,000 or 20,000? And why.

I mean unless your paying a team of guys todo it in a week.

Heh I dont even spend 250 a year on a shared sever that has 300GB of space and 3 Terabytes of transfer per month. Dedicated sever run aorund 99 to 299 a month. Im sure u can find some college kid todo it for 15 an hour if you cant do it yourself.

But hell i could do one myself lets say if i had ENOUGH TIME, to screw with it. Im doing 7 sites right now and thats the reason my site has been down for 3 years.

2,000 or 20,000?

comma says one, zeros say the other . . .

For those who have never been sucessful in business .... it takes money to make money. My guess is that with only $2,000 to invest you will have to be very lucky to earn it back. We all have a dream of hitting the lottery, 99.999999% never do. Best of luck.
.
AND as far as not wanting to pay a stock site 20% to market and sell our photos, heck I would do that any day of the week if they invested in the correct marketing program.
.
There are a lot of great photogs here at DPC, it is a shame that there is not an avenue to stock sell them. To set that up it would be a bigger project than running DPC as it is now.

oops, sorry guys...that's 2K which I think is quite reasonable. Remember this is not a photography site, it is a stock site. ie it has the ability to have buyers, sellers, track uploads, downloads, memberships, etc.

besides, setting up the site is the easy part. There are many other things to consider.
* setting sales prices
* what commission to pay towards maintaining site
* how to market the site ie get traffic thru the door
* etc

Buyer Accounts, PHP MySQL = Free + Programming time
Seller Accounts, PHP MySQL = Free + Programming time
Tracking Uploads, PHP MySQL = Free + Programming time
Tracking Downloads, PHP MySQL = Free + Programming time
Serperting Basic from Member Accounts, PHP MySQL = Free + Merchant Fees

Handling Online Direct Debit, Merchant Account Fee's

Server = 200 - 1000 a year

Programming costs = Depends.

Mainly you need someone who can program Perl or PHP and is familair with relation databases I prefer MySQL. A windows server youll probly be using a dedicated server with SQL Server 2005 and programming the pages for ASP.

Outside of that you have your Merchant Account, then up keep on security and databases.

NOW MARKETING... is the expensive part the site could be done for free and put on an inexpensive but capable server but Marketing is where the cost comes in.

I realize this but if you could sell and pay less than 20% (like maybe 2%? just enough to keep the site going) would you do it??

I realize this as well and I KNOW I can't do it myself... that is why it could be managed by involved DPCers and why I was asking for help :)

I just think the really great photogs here need some place that will give them consistent buyers (like you said) and get a bonus for being a member of DPC :)

So, would anyone be interested in helping to govern something like this?? If I build it, will you come?? :) LOL

Not if everyone markets together :) It would be a lot less work for 500 people to market one site than it would be for 5 :) This is where the "teamwork" comes in and I think that if everyone gave a little bit of effort towards everything that the site would need, everyone would benefit.

I think it sounds like a great idea.

Do you foresee this being like Alamy accepting anyone or only those not currently selling on Microstock sites?
03/13/2007 09:32:32 PM · #20
Just thinking you could almost do it as a combination of stock and on-demand. So like iStock does, clients could use one from the library or make a request (aka Challenge).

I actually thought of that just last night :)

It could work.

Well, I just contacted a friend of mine and he says he would be willing to provide the hosting services >.< yeehawww! If he does that, all we need now are some programmers and website builders!!

I am going to ask the husband for a fresh idea on design... I will post back here later.

If any of you could provide linkage to some great sites that would help too :)

i have thought about this a lot and I too think it would be great.
it would be really easy to have a check box--would you like this shot available for stock?

Would be nice if dpc could be fair to us and make it a 50/50 deal on the shots.
I think it would do extremely well!
