I went out to pick tomatoes this morning and a spider was hanging out on one of the plants. I HATE spiders, but he will keep other bugs away and he is living outside, not in my house, so I may let him stay there. I want to be sure, however, that he's not poisonous because then he has to go elsewhere.

Is there anyone who knows their spiders and can ID him? I live in Chicago.

Did he look like this from the front?

not exactly sure what this little guy is, but there are one two spiders i would worry about, brown recluse & black widow, and he's neither one...

Why is it always spider IDs? Why doesn't anyone ever ask for an ID of something pleasent...wild cats, fish, hot chicks?

But no, it's always spiders... geeze...

Sorry saiphfire, I know that was totally useless to you :-)

Wolf spider :)

And no, he's not poisonous, beyond the normal of all spiders, and not agressive. Let him be, he's doing good work out there :D

That's a beautiful jumping spider (Phidippus). For an ID, you might try bugguide.net.

They are not dangerous and can even be handled safely. They even make great pets. You will be glad you let it live.

My vote is "garden spider" see Araneus diadematus Not poisonous, good hunter.

Ohhh, wait, he looks even more like the picture of the garden spider! Any chance they're two names for the same thing? Oh, well, still not dangerous (and still can't jump... I hope).

Yes, you're right :) I was going by a shot on a different site (ages ago), which must have been wrong because now that I look at other wolf ones they're different. I know it's not a jumping spider, though!

So, garden spider it is, but that's still a GOOD thing :D
