Being new to this field ..so this could be a stupid question to ask ..

I have been reading in a bunch of forums that it is crutial to 'CALIBRATE YOUR MONITOR" to view digital pictures. What does this "CALIBRATE" actually mean? What's the recommended procedure to "CALIBRATE"?

For what I have in display settings is 1280x1024;32bit;21". I can see all the images from this site fine ... don't know if it can be or should be any better!

:p

Calibration doesn't refer to your monitors settings as such, but to the accuracy of the colours that it displays.

For example you may have an image that you think looks great on your screen, but when you post it online or view it on another PC it might look too light/dark or not have enough/too much contrast and the colours may be different.

You can purchase hardware to calibrate your monitor, but it aint cheap. I have SpyderPRO2 which cost be about £205, but was well worth the money for the peace of mind it brought

There are two levels of monitor calibration, hardware (as referenced in by the first respodnent) and software calibration. For applicatoins where very accurate color is a necessity and a color-managed workflow is maintained, hardware calibration is a necessity. For less stringent requirements, software calibration can be quite adequate.
I'd recommend this site, it will help you understand the fine points of calibration and help to attain a good software-based calibration.
