Hello,

I've been meaning to buy a large capacity CF card for my Canon G2. Sandisk offers a 1GIG CF and 512CF. The thing is, the 512meg is called "Ultra" which means that it can reach a transfer speed of up to 2.6meg/sec, compared to the regular 1.3meg/sec of the 1 GIG.

Do the different transfer speeds really make a difference? If I'm shooting in RAW mode (each pic about 2.8meg apiece), would getting the Ultra card mean that pictures will be stored faster, and lag between taking shots will be decreased? If so, that would be a huge bonus! I find that this "lag" really ticks me off.

How are highspeed Lexar CFs? I own a 128meg 4x now, but I've seen 25x around.

Sorry if this has been asked elsewhere.

Thanks,

Filip

I would suggest to have a peek at Rob Galbraith's Compact Flash Performance Database.

For a more personal view; I shoot with two 256 MB Sandisk ULTRA cards and a 1GB IBM Microdrive. THe ULTRA cards are useful when using a firewire cardreader, as the transfers are considerably faster. I Don't think you will notice any difference in the G2 when it comes to speed difference. However, the ULTRA cards have been rigorously tested by sandisk, and have a failure rate that is extremely low.

I've no direct experience with the ultra cards, but from reading what's out there as far as in-camera performance, I believe Filip is correct. In most consumer/prosumer cameras, the camera just does not take full advantage of the fast transfer speed. Most of the newer DSLRs do take advantage of these faster cards though.
There definitely will be a difference in speed when transferring via either a 1394 or USB 2.0 based reader.

Here's another good article on CF speeds etc from dpreview.com, and has a good comparison of all the major brands etc.
