LOL newbie - duh, found the site through internet search, site looks REALLY great and am excited to dive in. The main challenges are pretty self explanatory - just need inspiration!! Having some trouble working out how the side challenges and stuff works. Help? Is there voting / commenting on those entries? How do you upload to them? Sorry not usually this spastic about figuring things about but for some reason I can't find any 'how to' guidelines in the threads.

Hi Peter, Welcome aboard.

This is some great reading for newbies. I hope it helps cover some of the basics.

Welcome! Most of the side challenges are not voted on, the rest have some arbitrary rules set up by the person running it. They are for fun, usually to explore a style of photography for a month by posting a shot a day (or so). You post and comment on what everyone else is posting. It's kind of a group learning experience. As for joining them, you can, at any time ask the OP if you can jump in. 9 times out of 10 it's fine. The thing is, it's easier to participate if you are a paying member because then you have portfolio space. You upload to there, then post a thumbnail in the side challenge. People can view/comment by clicking your thumbnail. Now, you can also link to a flickr account or whereever you have your images. But you usually won't get many comments that way.

Yes, it's kind of misleading for them to be called challenges. Welcome to the madhouse.

So glad you've joined us. With the free membership, there are some limitations in functionality. The two major "obstacles" are that you can only participate in the once-a-week open challenges, and you don't get any storage space onsite beyond your open challenge entries. As Kelli noted, you can link to your images stored elsewhere. Although most of us feel that $25 per year is a pittance ($0.07 per day!!!!) for all the fun and games we get in exchange, you should take your time to see if you like it before ponying up. Have fun, and get ready to truly transform your photography.

Thanks all for the warm welcome and feedback. Much appreciated.

aha! makes sense now.

Yes that is the plan. Wanted to participate for a bit to see how it went before spending what for me (foreign exchange!) is a fair bit.

Okidoki - it was the lack of comments in the threads themselves that kind of threw me. Why don't people comment in the thread itself? Because that would make more sense to me than having to click on the thumbnail, read the comments and/or comment myself, go back to the thread and then do the next one and so on. Frightfully time consuming.

because if someone was browsing the picture in isolation ie through the person portfolio the comments wouldnt be there and in a thread like the look back thread how would you keep track of the comments with all the users,

if you post a specific question after a challenge saying why did my photo suck you will get comments in the thread and on the picture

Hey! Welcome.

It's a great place, I think you'll like it here - and I can promise that if you "work" DPC, you will improve as a photographer.

If you'd like to see some examples, just click on anyone's profile, and look at their first few entries, then their latest few entries. Most will show massive improvement.

Feel free to copy and paste the comment into both the forum thread and the photo's own discussion thread.

Commenting on other people's pictures will usually prove to be the most important thing you can do to improve your own photography, as you will identify (and articulate) those factors which you find contibute to (or detract from) a photo, and will be able to incorporate those into your own shots.

One caution, do not comment in the forums on any photos still in the voting phase; please wait until the challenge is over and the results posted. The same applies to posting any potential challenge out-takes or alternatives.

If you want to try out the advantages of paid membership (Portfolio storage, more challenges, etc.) you can do so for one month for $5 USD instead of signing up for a whole year.

Have fun!

Thanks! I am enjoying the site so far. Just waiting for a challenge that inspires me.

Thanks for the info about a month membership, but I don't see much point to that. I understand that there are huge advantages to joining - I'm just feeling my way in for a bit before committing. :)
