I tried to shoot daylight infrared using the F828's "nightshot" but it wouldn't let me shoot faster than 1/30 of a second. Has anybody found a workaround--I want to see what the world looks like in infrared!

I don't think that the nightshot feature will do the same as an infrared filter considering an IR filter is useless at night.

The F828 actually has an infrared flashlight which the camera uses either to illuminate the subject (nightshot) or to figure out how to focus it (nightframing). They're both designed for low light, but I'm trying to shoot IR in the daytime. How does the IR filter work? does it somehow block visible light and not IR light?

An IR filter block visable light (or most of it anyways). Normally you have to take longer exposures when shooting in IR. This one was shot during a bright sunny day with an 8 second exposure.

Here's another example. Three second exposure on this one. Have you tried shooting during the day? If it does work like a filter you should be alright as far a shutter speed goes.

I think nightshot brings in both infrared and normal light. What you need to look into is an infrared pass filter. I use the Hoya R72 for shooting infrared with my 10d, the fact that the 10d has an infrared cut filter means I have to do around 15-30 second exposures in daylight, but it's still fun. :) Since you have nightshot mode, you just enable it and along with a infrared filter you will be able to shoot using normal shutter speeds (definetly a plus).

So yeah, look into getting a Hoya R72 or simliar filter to fit your cam, I do know people who use Sony digicams (in nightshot mode) along with a filter to take infrared photos.

Friend of mine uses two diff sony cams for infrared, and she uses nightshot mode, plus as many dark ND filters as she has. The darker the better. Her shots are absolutely amazing!
