I bought my 4GB Microdrive off ebay for $210 or so shipped. Seller was rated 100% and he said it was never used so I went for it. They normally sell for $499 as you probably already know.

I heard somewhere that the 4GB iPod Mini uses a CF Microdrive and it sells for $250. People have been buying them for the drive and tossing the player.

Actually, it is the drive from the Creative 4GB Muvo2 that people have extracted and have been selling on eBay. The one in the iPod Mini does not work in digital cameras. (I'm not sure if the ones in the currently-shipping Muvo2's work in digital cameras for that matter, since a drive for an iPod Mini does work in a Muvo2, so Creative could have switched by now to the model Apple is using...)

I am clueless about these. Is there anything that I could record onto from a memory card or a USB port? What would it be, and how expensive would it be?

A microdrive is an ultra-tiny hard drive (i.e., inside is a tiny platter that physically spins) that fits in cameras with CompactFlash Type II slots (only). It acts just like a regular CF card, but is more fragile than a typical solid-state CF card.

I have a Sony DSC 828 arriving tomorrow. I have been doing a lot of research and have been unable to get a straight answer as to the best solution, Microdrive, Flash Card, maufacturer, price, speed, etc. A friend of mine tells me he has a 2 gb card and it will not function in the 828. He says the 1 gb works fine.
I am going to experiment with the Memory sticks I have and determine the speed, the distortion, and then borrow my friends' to do a comparison.
All this hype can make you insane. |

Well I must be damn lucky because I've dropped mine a couple of times and once while it was still in my card reader and connected to my Mac. I don't endorse this sort of reckless behavior but it's more sturdy than you think. :)

Maybe I am confused, I thought a Microdrive was something to store photos FROM your compact flash...
Maybe what I am looking for is a Mass Storage Device? I dunno I am all confused. I am going to florida in August, and I wanna be able to take more than 300 pictures without worrying about space...

Are you talking about a Stand Alone Data Storage Unit? I have a Nixvue that I use that is 30 gig that I dump my CF cards to. Here are some at B&H: Stand Alone Data Storage Units

It is quite sturdy, but still not as sturdy as a memory card.
