I just got a Tamron 28-75 2.8 and haven't had time to mess with it yet, but I think the same might be true for it. It's 1:3.9 without tubes, but this really makes me want to try it out with them.

You'd still need extension tube(s). The 16-35L II will go to a magnification of 0.22 (or 1:4.5) without tubes, which is quite impressive, but with a 12mm tube, the 17-40 can approach 0.8 (1:1.25).

I believe you would find macro photography with the EF 16-35mm f/2.8L USM II without the extension tube even more impressive.

Yup. Use it with extension tubes.

I came home from work today to find a package from brianlh, containing the 17-40L I bought from him. I went out back to snap a few test shots, and on a whim I grabbed a 12mm extension tube. After playing with the lens in "normal" shooting mode, I attached the extension tube, set the focus to manual and infinity, and shot a couple wide angle macros:



It's neat to be able to get in tight, but still capture that wide view of the background. Unlike the complete blurring that occurs with a long focal length macro lens, the background remains somewhat recognizable. A very different way to shoot macro.
I'm really liking the 17-40. It's excruciatingly sharp when stopped down, a really nice landscape lens.
