I don't know how to get my picture within the 150kb size without making it too small to be viewed. Do I need to take the picture at a lower resolution or is there some other method to make it smaller without losing quality and size? I am using a Sony A700 with 12mp. Should I shoot in lower jpeg? Don't want to lose out on challenges because noone can see the image well enough.

I did use the tutorial however I was over the 150KB limit when I resized it for 640 pixels. So I had to keep adjusting until I got under the 150 KB limit. Is there something I am missing?

You have to adjust the 'quality percentage' down so that you are within the 150kb range. keep the image the same pixel size, just adjust the slider from "100%" down to the appropriate level to meet the file size requirements.

One question: You are using "Save for Web" as the save tool for resizing for DPC, right?

I've noticed that I have to bring it down to around 143ish to keep the actual file under 150k and around 194 to keep it under 200k under the "Save for web" option.

Now I see, Thank you. Wish I had asked before I submitted my photo.

Each image has differing levels of detail (color etc), so as long as the image is below or exactly at 150.0kb, you are fine.

Yes, I used save for the web. I didn't notice the quality slider made the adjustment to the KB until I just went back and resized the image again right now. You think they would let me sub out my photo already submitted?? Just wishful thinking, lol

There's also the optimize for file size option which adjusts the quality automatically to make it fit within the file size you specify.

As long as the submission phase is (i.e. the image is not in voting), you can resubmit the altered file (or pull it completely)
