Hey all, and welcome aboard what promises to be the most exciting ride of your lives! (David makes that promise, not me.) I figured I would go ahead and jump start things with a team thread where we can discuss/debate and or pontificate on all things DPCOIII, all in the comfort of our very own lair, with comfy furnishings and a well stocked fridge.

It looks the team has settled in at:
Bobnospum Bob
cryan Chris
Dtremain David
Haze Jane
Jaker Jake
Joker1114 Patrick
TonyT Tony
walkingfish Karl

I'm currently at that pesky job thingy, so I don't have oodles of time at the moment, but I would imagine we will need a place to comment and critique each others entries. In the last Olympics we used Flickr, and that seemed to work out very well. Also I'm assuming that we will need some kind of a jersey or logo of some sort for our profile pages. (I'm not your man for that! lol)

If anyone has their heart set on being team captain, I didn't mean to step on your toes, and it's all yours! Just thought I would get things started as there were some questions on the signup thread. :-)

Hi Jake and the rest of the team!

I'm the junior member of this team with only 9 challenges under my belt and I'm pretty much a newbie to photography. I'm open to all criticism -- I'd like to think I have pretty thick skin (being married and all :) ) so don't worry about offending me.

I hope to be able to contribute to the (almost) certain USA NE Olympic championship and I look forward to getting to know all of you better.

Kim, It really warms my little Joker heart seeing that you've set this noble, yet clearly unattainable goal for yourself. Life is a series of lessons, and if you never dare to try, you'll never succeed. Your lesson for today is how to eat our dust. Please report back once you've mastered this, and I will assign a new goal. Thank you.

Welcome Karl! I'm hoping that all of the members will eventually shamble on in here, but I'll send some PM's out here in a little bit. Truth of the matter, I'm a relative newbie myself. I've been into photography for about a year and a half, but really didn't start learning anything until i bought a DSLR and joined this site. You've made a great decision signing up for the Olympics. I can't tell you how valuable the experience was for me the last go around, and if you check my scores they've really gone up pretty dramatically. (In my opinion, anyway.) I also have a dog and enjoy the beach, but enough about me!

Now Karl, how are you with designing a jersey or a banner for our profile pages? I'm definitely not the person for this task, so don't feel bad if you aren't either. We've got plenty of time to prepare!

Copied from the olympics signup thread. Templates for Jersey's and banners.

If anybody wants to create new team jerseys like the ones I created last time you can download my photoshop template here:

Jersey Template (PSD file) - I've organized it so you could just swap out a new logo and change team colors easily or get more creative if you like. If any team wants me to create a new one just ask and I'll be happy to create one for you just make sure whoever is asking represents the team.

Btw, there is only one team in this template so if you wanted to just update the jerseys you used last time with new names and such PM or email me and I can make your team specific photoshop file available or make the updates for you if you ask nicely. :) If you do ask I request that only one person per team contact me with their team updates so I don't have to go back and forth making changes.

Small Team Banner Sample (PSD file) - Just a sample version of one of the signature banners. Basically once you have your jersey created just copy and paste them here and resize it to fit. Again I can update this for you if you wanted to stick with what you used last time.

Thanks Judi, but the file's gone. :(

Did anyone download them when they were available? If you did, PM me and I'll send my email addy so you can forward them.

Yes I did....I am on my way out....send me an email addy and I will forward it to you later today.

Frankly, I'm sure someone else on the team with more photoshop experience and more talent than me would do a much better job. But, I'll be happy to check out Yanko's template and see how difficult it is.

It appears that a lot of the other teams are coming up with nicknames. Should we decide on one first before designing the logo?

LMAO!!!

Im not setting this goal for myself, Im only stating what will occur naturally! Think of this as a hurdle in life that god has set before you. Try to attain a position above the SOUTHWEST. I know it may not seem impossible, but one day, a far off time in the future, you may be able to do this. Although, not likely...

Hi Guys:o) Its great to be part of this team and hope I can learn and contribute something worthwhile.. Jaker you seem like a natural leader.. you have my vote.. I would gladly take a stab at designing the jerseys.. Please forward me a copy of Judi's template if possible.. When do the olympics start officially?

Hello all.

This should be fun. I'll second Jaker's nomination as Captain. If he is willing to do the extra work of organizing, who am I to say no, especially since he just beat me in Abstract B&W after I did a new personal best! (and we can always overthow him later if we need to -- just kidding)

How were things organized for your team in the last DPCO?

A nick name is a good idea or are we sticking with the name "USA Northeast"?

Northeast is fine with me, but then I actually live in the Northeast :)

Hey all. I'm here. 'Twil be an honor working with Jaker again, and getting to know the rest of you. I'll second WalkingFish's post - I'm here to learn - if you want to frustrate me, tell me my shot is good and then have it go out and garner a huge 4.2!

My wife looks over my shoulder from time to time and makes comments - she's not a photographer, but has a great eye - so I'll pass along her thoughts from time to time.

Since the elitist Jokers down in the SW dumped us to go regional, I'd say it'll be an honor to make them reconsider.

I've been on dpchallenge since spring of '07, and have entered most of the challenges. I am slowly improving (sometimes more slowly than others).

I run a Fuji S700 (which retails for under $200), and use Paint Shop Photo Pro X2 for my PP work. Recently began using Neat Image.

Started doing photography about 30 years ago. Have taken lots of pictures, but no formal training. As far as comments / suggestions go, do not hesitate to think anything is too basic - I tend to be a bit oblivious to what is obvious to everyone else.

I shoot with a Sony A350K which I purchased in the spring so I could use my old Minolta lenses from my film days. I had never taken a picture in other than Auto mode as recently as March 2008. I have devoured a dozen or so photography books and tons of DPC wisdom since then and sometime it even shows in my photos. I post process in Gimp, which I am fairly proficient in and recommend whole-heartedly.

My Christmas list, to be given to my wife and two kids, includes some filters, a new bag, and a "real" tripod.

Thanks for picking the jersey design.

I'd like "00" for my number and "WalkingFish" for my name.

I'm not from the northeast but I can think of some things related to that area that might be good for a nickname.
Skylines
Yankees
City Folk
Crabcakes
Patriots
Nor'easters
Pepperidge Farmers
Chowders

Hello all!

I don't have any problem Getting things set up and moving in the right direction as best I can, though you may reserve the right to overthrow me later. I just require a majority vote sent to me via carrier pigeon.

Seriously though, I think things ran pretty smoothly for us last time, so I should be able to get things under control if nobody objects.

So the topics of discussion so far...

Start date: From everything I can find, the start date for DPCOIII is still Sept 16th, and will only include the open challenges. (Member challenges and free studies can of course still be entered, they just won't count for the team scores.) If anybody has seen anything contrary, please let us know. As you may have noticed, the signup and discussion threads get pretty congested, and it's possible I may have missed something.

A nickname: Sounds like a great idea to me. Apparently DirtDiver is looking for something that sounds "real." I'm not sure exactly what that means. Any suggestions??

A jersey and or banner: Looks like we've got at least two volunteers to listen to us complain about the colors and the size of the font, etc. I'll check around and see if someone has posted the actual template that was used last time.

And probably the most important part.... Last go around, we used a FLickr group to display our images. This worked out really well for several reasons. It's free. You can set up an exclusive group that only members can see. It's easy to comment on each others images, post threads, etc. It's accessible from most locations. (lots of stuff is blocked from my work computer, but even I can get there if I need to)
I'm certainly open for suggestions if someone has a better site, but it seems like this was pretty simple to start and maintain.

As I've mentioned probably a billion times already, the last round of this was a lot of fun. Smack talking abounds, friendships are built, and everyone I've talked to about it learned a lot from getting a bunch of different opinions on their shots before entering. When the last round ended I thought I would be glad to take a break for awhile, but as it turns out it was very motivating to have a deadline and a team that was counting on me. It pushed my creativity, and I probably entered several challenges I otherwise wouldn't have. Definitely a great learning experience! I hope you guys enjoy it as much as i did.

Anything I missed for now??

Now there you guys go posting while I'm writing a long winded diatribe.

Hmmm. If it's not taken, I would like 01. Not out of any over inflated ego, I promise. I was 00 the last round, and Walkingfish already claimed that one, so I thought i would try to go in consecutive order.

Of the list proposed so far, i like the skylines and the Nor'easters.

Nor'easter is pretty good name -- It is a nasty winter storm for those "not from around here"

Others I thought of
Lobsters
Minutemen (logo included)

Or we could go more generic (and maybe silly)
F-Stops
Aperture Americans
ISO Kings
