Pre-PMA 2008: Canon has today announced a new compact digital SLR, the twelve megapixel EOS 450D (Digital Rebel XSi). On the surface a very similar camera to the EOS 400D, however there are a range of significant improvements; twelve megapixel CMOS sensor, 3.0" LCD monitor, Live View with both AF modes (contrast-detect and passive), 14-bit processing and RAW, spot metering, improved AF, 3.5 fps continuous shooting, a larger viewfinder, SD/SDHC storage and a new higher capacity battery. All in all a fairly impressive range of usage oriented improvements and refinements.

Can you just imagine the knot in your stomach if you dropped that thing?!? (I broke my 70-200 f/2.8L IS and I know how I felt when that happened)

I'd have massive amounts of insurance on that baby! But I'd still cry if I dropped it ... and with it's weight, dropping it is a definite possibility!

A 12 MP 14-bit Rebel .. NICE! :-D

I dunno... I don't get it???? The swap to SD cards is just strange and another change in batteries if I read it right is just stupid. A number of the features basically kill the 40D (spot meter e.t.c.).... 5D is due for a replace anyway, so I understand that gap lessening. Unless they are putting out a 50D to move that up out of the way soon....

seems a little quick to replace the 400d. seems like it just came out and they already have an updated model.
do like the new button arrangement though

A site I read said that the Rebel hasn't changed batteries in a while.

That 200mm f/2 sounds great!

What are you talking about? Do you mean to say that this new camera has a better spot meter than the 40D? According to my manual, the 40D's spot meter is "weighted at the center covering about 3.8% of the viewfinder area."

This new camera's spot meter covers 4% (according to DPReview).

- Why they cannot just pick a damn battery format and develop that is beyond me. Yeah, time for a change every 2nd release right :-/
- See the price of that lens? It will drop in price after a while but still pretty bad.

I mean they made it too close to the 40D in features (plus the marketing thing of more MPix)... The 40D is a recent release and to me they have killed the sales of that unless they release a 50D real soon... like later in the week soon. Why would I buy a 40D for quite a bit more then the new rebel?? I think the only difference now is the fps (which I assume is been limited in the new one to keep something to differentiate).

A larger capacity battery is required to support the larger LCD screen, the DIGIC III processor, larger sensor, LiveView, (shall I continue?...) ;-)

Battery life on the 40D is amazing. I've been out 3 times now in -10C or colder weather (2 - 3 hours at a time) and I haven't recharged in between and it still shows full. On my 10D I would have had to change out the battery during each outing under these conditions. Why couldn't they just use the BP 511 batteries in the Rebel line in the first place.

Seems like a very nice back up for my 5D, good stuff inside and fair price. I'm choosing between this and the 30D now.

Seems like only yesterday they upped the 350 to 400.

My biggest gripe with the 400 was the fact they shrunk the body, making it feel more prosumer that pro. I went and got a 30D at the time instead so I guess Canon achieved their aim...(w*nkers!)

N

EDIT: 200m f2? YUM!

The lenses were announced in some form months ago, so that's not a surprise.
The 450 is kind of expected, so that's good.

TODAY is the rumoured announcement day for another camera...the 7D or 5D mk2...if it's true then you'll see bourds light up all over the 'net in a few hours.

possable?
i had heard that the 24-70L USM II will be post?

Well, I was wanting to sell my 400 XTi (I have two identical bodies), but now the price will drop out as they push out the old inventory.

The new camera looks like a significant upgrade, much more so than the 350 to 400.

And, it looks to be well worth the price. I am a little surprised they introduced this only six months after the 40D, considering the megapixel upgrade. I know the 40D and the 450 XSi are focused at different markets, but there is quite a bit of cross over.

wow looks like a very nice camera, geese I was looking at the 40D now I dont know what to do this camera looks really good. Geese 12mp lol I though 10mp was alot

It did seem fast to me also that this one came out. But for 800 bucks looks like you getting a nice little camera... so now I have to decide if I want this one or get the 40D. hmmm the decisions and then its rumored that a 40D replacement maybe coming now...

Just in time for tax rebate season... Coincidence? I think not. =D

ETA: Not that I'm really interested. While 14-bit and lotsa megapixels is tasty, the SD card thing pisses me off (after investing in fast CF cards and reader).

My response: Meh. Show me the 5D replacement! =D
