If that photo on your profile is you then I'm in love :-)> ,bring on the beer!

I'm just excited to see actual humor and the understanding of humor in posts here! Excellent! I was half expecting a lynch mob in the horizon, but instead I get praises. Sigh, why can't EVERY day be this great?!
Tra la la la!

P.S. the original posts were discussing the pic, which I was commenting on, not the title. The title is awful, I think everyone is in agreement there.

Cat and golffish go together like flies on s*&?. Ever see a cat when he first realises there's fish in a tank or a container?

How! Didn't find a way.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think that kosmik was referring to the fact that you can change the title of an image you have submitted up until the voting starts.

Your right....that is a little overdone....and so is the wine glass diffraction thing too...or whatever you call it.

Hey! How'd you do that kosmik? I can't change mine..........oh nevermind, I guess ya gotta ribbon. LOL
02/10/2004 12:29:09 PM · #66
Funny thing about the title for this topic. The one who started it got a blue ribbon with... a bug ;-)
02/10/2004 01:04:38 PM · #67
Photography is subjective like any art form....there are people that will like a shot and others will hate it.
Secondly, there are thousands of cat lovers and animal lovers in general; just because you don't like the subject matter doesn't mean that it is a bad photograph. Pay attention to the number of advertisements that include animals.

Ah, but that's OK. It's all the imitators since then that are the problem. Riiiiiight...

I'm pretty sure pitsaman's original post was used to demonstrate irony - not to be hypocritical. I threw in a cat shot in the last challenge for giggles and if it had done well I would've made the same post he did....ahem...something like this " GASP! What HAS the world come to!?!".

Thanks ScottK, for noticing I'd posted... I sometimes think my posts become invisible as soon as I hit Return on the keyboard. :)

=======

Congrats on your win, kosmikreeper, and thanks for the explanation! I really did wonder about that title. :)

----------

I get a kick out of seeing what wins each challenge because there are usually a couple of challenges in a row where I'm totally in sync with the majority of voters and then one or more where I'm totally out of sync with the majority. It's impossible to guess which it's going to be.

I tend to vote for the best photograph (according to my personal aesthetic) which meets the challenge (according to my personal understanding of the challenge, which changes to include clever and/or unusual interpretations I see as I'm voting). I think, overall, I tend to give higher votes than most people do. I'm always surprised when I see people get 1s, 2s, and 3s when the photo is definitely meeting the challenge and technically good. Most people who vote in here seem to be hypercritical and vote on a curve - sort of like being in art school! I'm glad my ego isn't riding on how people vote. :)

I like to support people's risk taking and vote higher on creative approaches to a challenge, especially if they surprise me with something I didn't expect that works. So, even if the image is something I don't personally like (for whatever reason), I'll give it high marks for being stunning technically and/or unique conceptually. I only give less than a 5 if the photograph is of really poor quality AND doesn't seem to meet the challenge in any oblique stretch of the imagination so, I end up voting mostly 5s and above. I give an image an 8 or 9 if it really works or works beautifully. I give it a 10 if it hits me between the eyes when I see it, a perfect combination of meeting the challenge (hopefully in a creative and unique way) and being a really wonderful, even stellar, photograph in its own right.

Carla, I read the above post with interest and now feel I'll be able to vote on pictures as I want to - start at midway and detract/add points on myperception of the picture, my technical knowledge (or lack of it) need not really play a great part. For instance, I'll purchase a picture if I like it not because of who took/painted it but because I like it and can relate to it.
