yall arguing about coldfusion. forgive my neophyte nature, here, but of the 4 forces/interactions, isn't gravity the only one who's actual direct mechanism is not known? basically, for all intents and purposes, don't you need an object of tremendous mass to produce gravity? and wouldn't the compression created by any such object generate a lot of heat, hence the non "coldness" in such fusion?

i just got out of bed, so forgive me if my questions don't make sense : )

i too dont understand your message, clay. seems like you're mixing together at least 2 different things.

a) there are people who are trying to control other people. those people suck. but i dont think they're doing it because they're not competent, i think they're doing it because they have some morality that comes from the bible or whatever their religion that they feel that everyone else has to adhere to as well.

b) then there are the people who do think they're hot shite, and get frustrated when the rest of the world doesn't recognize their 'hot shite' status, and rationalize it as everyone being too "stupid" or "ignorant" or whatever.

So those are 2 different things, don't ya think?

p.s. my graduated cylinders are safely hidden away ..

why are there *always* people trying to control what everyone else does? if you were competent in your ability to do whatever it is you do, you wouldnt demand praise from everyone. most of the people complaining about things like this dont come here to learn. they come here to lord over everyone to show us just how superior they are

Well, it hasn't been unified with the other interactions in terms of fields and associated particles. That's what the search for the Grand Unified Theory is all about. But yeah, you're right :)

That's pretty much what I was saying... the idea behind 'cold fusion' was that it could occur at room temperature in a test tube without requiring a hot plasma or any of the other conditions that people need to satisfy to get fusion to happen in a laboratory. It turned out that their experiment wasn't repeatable, and in fact the huge numbers of neutrons they thought they were seeing were a result of miscalibrated detectors. It's a textbook case of something one of my Physics lecturers referred to as 'pathological science', which is defined as an idea that seems so important that as soon as it is published, scientists all over the world in all kinds of fields rush to replicate the results and be the first to confirm it, but as it becomes apparent that a big mistake was made no one wants their name associated with it anymore so they drop out of the program, revoke their funding, etc... leading to really sharp peak and then fall in publications on the subject. My guess is that if hokie's friend's project involved the words 'cold' and 'fusion' in its proposals for funding, it was never going to get up for that reason :)

Tokamaks are the machines that most fusion research is centred on. They are so cool! Creating the conditions that exist inside a star is no mean feat... I have no doubt they'll get there one day though :)

Isn't it strange how a thread can take a turn..hehe

I mentioned cold fusion in my post along with inbred politicians and cannibalism because they seemed just so gosh-darned linked together :-)

Actually, the reason my friends super collider project (and it was a HUGE MONEY project in Texas that got canned..big hub-bub..interesting read there) because energy research in the United States, especially in the direction of anything that has a hint of nuclear to it is D.E.A.D on arrival nowadays.

Any reason you can think of from public sentiment, cheap energy, big money conspiracy...they all have played a part to absolutely ruin our energy policy in america.

We spent more time in the 1990's TRADING energy ala Enron than developing alternate resources or improving existing ones. And you see where THAT got us.

No power plants being built, no energy research, cars that have had fuel economy going DOWN. Wonder why we spend so much time talking about the middle east? Sound like the 1970's anyone?

absolutely. and the good news is that because we've been through this before, a template already exists for getting out of it - if only people would see that (i.e. go away SUV's, etc). . .

lisae: that's what i read - the CF research has become so stigmatized by what occurred, that basically if you're openly working in that field, you're automatically considered on the same level as people who've been abducted by aliens, dolphin-assisted healers, and psychic hotline personalities.
