Pretend?

I had some fun with the police in July after the terrorist attacks. Have my very own receipt for a search under the prevention of terrorism act following an interesting discussion as to why I should or should not take photographs of the police, whether they had the power to order me to stop taking photographs or whether they were merely asking politely, and whether they could take my camera away from me.

Oh and if we are doing a night shoot, could someone bring along a spare tripod?

Really?? The view from the other side of the river/Westminster Brdge is pretty good. But I am astonished that they might contemplate getting stressed with photographers near a tourist attraction!!! Don't know what the world is coming to.

I can confirm at this juncture that "they" do, indeed get somewhat agitated about photographers using tripods at the London Eye. One night I was there, I got moved along (initially quite abruptly, but the tone changed after a little conversation), but was told that if I went about 10 metres along the riverbank, it would be all right, as that was off the land that the London Eye occupies. So I moved along, set up again and snapped away under the baleful glare of the security guards who had had, at least for a couple of moments, a little interest in an otherwise boring night.

Yes - a tripod will be a requirement. I am hopefully buying a new one soon (waiting for some compensation from Jacobs for screwing up my CCD with their cleaning kit).

Or 3200 mode (can hand hold at night quite impressively).

Can I do three posts in one ( a "tri-post", not to be confused with a tri-pod), too?

I'm sure that there will be enough people going that you'll be able to borrow a tripod off someone every so often :o) (BTW, I removed all those random duplicate posts)

Thanks.

I think I managed a quadruple post, I blame it on the site.

hi hi

So what's been decided so far for this GTG? Here's what I think has been decided so far (too many posts to trawl through! Sorry I'm lazy :) ), feel free to correct me.

Saturday, 29th October
Night Shoot (time?)
City Hall, The Eye (any others?)
Bring tripod or have the steadiness of a surgeon.

Yes, you've got most of those details right - I'll update the original post to reflect them shortly. I'm currently in the process of contacting both the London Eye and City Hall regarding their policies on photo permits, so hopefully we'll know one way or the other on those places.

As for other locations, Tower Bridge is always a good one, along with the outside of the Tower of London, and there's always the Tate Modern & Millennium Bridge, St Pauls, and various other landmarks along the Thames that are all well lit at night. The question really is how far we're prepared to walk at night :o)

A rough guess at a timeline for the night would be:

6pm: meet at a restaurant somewhere near the Thames
8pm: head off down the Thames
10pm: find a pub for a quick drink before heading for home

Of course, it'll depend on whether people want to try shooting at sunset (5:39pm) before eating or not, and we'll probably want a backup option should the weather not co-operate :o)

I've been hanging on, hoping that everyone would meet up earlier in the day, so that I could get along. As it stands, we're going to a double birthday bash for a couple of our friends in the evening of the 29th, so night time shooting in London is off the agenda for that day.

I hope everyone has a lot of fun and posts some good shots.

Looking forward to no. 7 then.

Well it turns out I won't be able to make it after all. Blame it on work and a messed up schedule. I hope you all have fun and I'll be looking forward to the pictures. Some other time I guess :/

I will be travelling back to the US for the month of November, So I could probably manage to fly in on the 29th, and Overnight in London. If that's the finalized date, I'm in.

Excellent news dave. I've updated the initial thread again. Any of the possibles able to commit either way yet?
10/01/2005 11:45:16 AM · #63
Hi should be able to attend that - can also meet up a bit earlier in the afternoon to catch sunrise if anyone is interested.

Can also bring along a spare tripod - but it is a very weak travel one that will just hold a DSLR with a wide angle lens. Might be a bit of shake depending on wind. You will need to tell me if you need it as space will be a premium.

Can we have an exact meeting place and time - as it has been a while and probably only remember Kavey.

please don't bother for my sake

OK, I'm finally back online, and catching up with everything. Since there doesn't seem to be any dissent, I'm currently planning the route as being a walk between the Westminster area towards the London Bridge/Tower Hill area, since that'll encompass quite a bit.

Since sunset is going to be about 5:35pm that evening (and it'd be a shame to miss it), I suggest that we meet mid-afternoon for a late lunch / early dinner (4pm ish?), catch the sunset around Westminster, and then wander the route towards Tower Bridge, going past the London Eye, Hungerford Bridge, St Pauls, Tate Modern, Millennium Bridge, HMS Belfast, City Hall, etc, all of which should be nicely lit up. I'm still chasing both City Hall and the London Eye regarding their stance on nighttime photography, but I should have all that sorted before the GTG.

The two meeting points I'm considering are Millbank Lounge Bar, just south of Westminster, or Troia Bar & Restaurant, behind the old City Hall by Waterloo. Let me know which you'd prefer (or if you know of anywhere else in the area that's good & cheap), or I'll just have to book one at random :o)

Oh, and FYI, I've recently acquired a cheap lightweight tripod (in addition to the heavy bugger) that I'd be willing to loan out, should anyone need to borrow one.

Millbank lounge bar looks a bit better to me, but I'm not that bothered.

I am going to India on the 27th and will be there for 6 weeks so count me out ...

But if someone wants to have coffee with me and walk with me around the town on the 25th or 26th of October then just email me.

Sorry, we need some time at home - too many busy weekends - we won't be making this one. HAVE A GREAT TIME and see you on the next one!
10/21/2005 05:26:36 AM · #70
Cheers for the message Manic.

I'm still definitely coming. I may bring some friends who enjoy photography along too. I'm working on convincing them. Even if they dont come I'm still coming.

Its my first time, so how will I recognise you guys? Will you all having SLRs around your neck? :D

Hi I am still in.

Assuming this is the 29th we are talking about (but can also make 22cnd). Have no preference on restaurant.

Do think it is a good idea on the late lunch and then a sunset to night shoot.

*bump* for the afternoon people
10/21/2005 09:47:30 AM · #73
Umm.. trying really hard to now sound like a clueless idiot, what's this *bump* business.. I've seen it a few times.. but no idea :)

10/21/2005 10:30:09 AM · #74
The 'bump' stuff is when someone is "bumping" the thread, ie moving it back up to the top of the front page's listings. It should only be done sparingly, since threads do die eventually, but it's useful for drawing a thread to people's attention if they probably missed it previously.

Yes, we're talking about the 29th, and if you want to bring more people along, just let me know before Wednesday next week (when I'll be booking the restaurant), so that I can give them final numbers. As for recognising us, it'll be the group of people all hauling tripods ;o)

If no one likes either of those bars, there is a bar one right by the wheel.
