What would the vote average of the three ribbons combined, for all challenges be?

Ummm ....... sorry....... but ........... can you please retype that or take my bottle of JD away from me?

I think he wants an average vote received by a ribbon-winning shot...

Was wondering what level the bar is set for the top pictures?

You can start by loooking here

I think what is being asked is:

1) average vote for all first place finishers
2) average vote for all second place finishers
3) average vote for all third place finishers

Meaning, sum the average scores of all first place finishers in all challenges and divide by the number of challenges and so on for second and third place.

This is not all of what you are looking for, but a quick run through MS Excel produced these numbers. This is compiled from all of the data in the Challenge History back to Jan 2002. 342 Challenges, both member and non-member.

Average Score of Winner: 7.37
Average Overall Score: 5.3
Average Low Score: 3.17

Yes, sorry to be so obtuse about the wording of my question. This is what I was curious about. Interesting to know what average the voters determine to be a ribbon. Thank you.

Here are the numbers:

Average 1st place score: 7.359
Average 2nd place score: 7.073
Average 3rd place score: 6.924

Sorry, we don't have access to statistical information. In fact, now that DQs have gone public, there's very little that we have access to that you don't.

Don't you guys have a forum that we can't see?

That's a secret ;)

We could tell you, but then we'd have to kill you.

Seriously, though, we don't have access to the entry database itself.

Since this is stats type page I will ask this.

What is the difference in the average score, and the midrange score seen at the page srdanz linked?
06/13/2005 07:54:16 PM · #15
The midrange score is halfway between the highest and lowest. The average score is the average of all entries for that challenge.

Shannon,

I agree with your explanation, but it is kind of useless, the way it is calculated. (adding the highest and the lowest, and dividing it by two.)

I thought (without looking at it first) that the midrange score would be the score received by an entry that placed in the middle (50% rank)

-Serge

Edit: I also believe that this is statistically correct way to calculate the value. Maybe D&L should look into this...

I didn't say it was useful. I was just explaining what those numbers are (and it was an educated guess anyway).

I would like to see the Challenge History table look like this to include ribbon scores:
1-Challenge
2-Submission Dates
3-Type
4-Entries Highest - Replace Name with Blue Ribbon Score
5-Add- Red Ribbon Score
6-Add - Yellow Ribbon Score

7-Score Average
8-Score Midrange
9-Score Lowest
10-Score Total
11-Votes Avg #
12-Votes Total
13-Total Comments
14-Avg # Comments

Never mind. :)

I second that, with the change in the calculation of the median score (called midrange here) to represent the score of the 50th percentile photo.

As meaningless as it may be, "midrange" is the correct term for the value shown in the Challenge History table. What you are requesting is the "median". (reference: An Introduction To Statistics, Lesson 3).

Got that. I corrected myself in a post right before yours. It is median...

It's useful for comparing with other challenges. And that would be lost if we changed horses in mid-stream by going to a median instead.

Maybe I shouldn't have said 'useless'. However, that information (midrange) is readily available if you look at the high and low score. The median value of the challenge eliminates extreme scores (such as the high-flying 7.675 naturally framed shot by Imaginner, followed by the distant 7.076 by nordic. The midrange suggests the value of 5.766 for the challenge, while the median value was 5.379 for the 50% shot

You can look at this value and know how much a person had to score to be placed in the top half of the challenge.

I know, statistics... not an exact science after all. It can be manipulated to everyone's liking.

I would not change the calculations midstream - I would do them for all challenges - the data is available, it is just a matter of changing the formula in the table. You'd still be comparing apples to apples.
