Hey everyone,

I'm having really big issues with both LR and PS. Huge lag. Everything takes forever, and it seems to hang every time I do anything. I've increased my scratch disk size, have a dedicated 1 TB drive just for processing. Do you think I should uninstall and reinstall? Or is that just a huge headache?

Everything worked fine until the last update.

How old is the computer/motherboard?

Not THAT old. It seems to have started with the latest update. Both LR and PS started acting up at the same time.

Couple questions:
1.) How much physical RAM do you have installed?
2.) Are any of your hard drives (specifically the scratch drive) physical rotating drives?

When apps start dogging it this bad, I begin to suspect that memory is low and the applications are paging to disk. Even in cases where the disk is an SSD, performance often takes a huge hit.
When the applications are running and displaying this behavior, try looking at memory usage. On a Windows machine, bring up Task Manager and click on the Performance tab. On the left, you can see summary information on current CPU, memory and disk usage. If you are seeing very high memory usage, and the disk usage is also high, then paging to disk is the culprit.
ETA: don't ask me how to do this on a Mac, 'cause I dunno.

I have 32GB of RAM, and until the update, there was no problem. My dedicated scratch disk is solid state. My external drives are all physical with TONS of room (10 TB drives). Only my programs are on my C drive.

I haven't added any more apps/programs. I have the same # of windows/tabs open. But my RAM is totally pegged. What's changed?

My guess is that Adobe's latest update included some change in memory allocation/usage which is incompatible with your system setup. This is possibly unintentional. You might try looking at an Adobe discussion forum or their "help" site.

I hate "upgrades" ... :-(

I went through this recently.. Before I could run Outlook, multiple instances of chrome (each with dozens of tabs) and run PS and LR with no issue. Then something changes and LR crawled to a halt and even had a BSOD (Blue Screen of Death) once or twice. Basically went LR mobile for a while until recently when I can now run LR and still have many things open at the same time.. I blame updates but I honestly don't know which bugs my since I work in IT

Yes on both counts, and forget the forums. Whenever I've sought help there it's taken a week just to provide them with sufficient details to satisfy their needs, even though I provide them in the OP. Then the inevitable chiming in of people with something "almost" exactly like my problem. Very snarky bunch over there.

So we know that Ps and/or Lr are hogging memory and causing paging, which is what I expected the issue was. Now, the question is "why??"
I'm running Lr and Ps in 16GB of RAM on my work laptop, and not having that issue. Look at the preferences for Ps and Lr with regard to maximum memory allocation. If they are too large, you may want to reduce them.
Another question: is the memory maxed out immediately upon opening the app(s)? Or does it take some time. If the latter, there may be a memory leak.

Assume for the moment there's a memory leak. What does that mean and how do I fix it? I've pared down my start-up apps to the bare minimum.

I also just upped the max memory allocation, thinking that would help. It hasn't and could be an aggravating factor.

If it is a memory leak, there is usually little you can do. The application developers will have to address it. It seems like it is specific to your hardware; there may be others out there with similar hardware that are experiencing the same thing. Adobe needs to hear from you so that your voice can be added to any others that are affected. That will raise the visibility of the issue, and help it to get addressed earlier rather than later.

if you're in PC world, you can run Task Manager and you can see what's taking up your resources, and which resources.

if you're in Mac world, I don't know what they have.

Also, I often find that it's your anti-malware software causing problems. Try turning it off temporarily and see if that makes a difference.

I'll check task manager again to see what's hogging memory. But I haven't changed my anti-malware in ages and it was never a problem before.

in addition to memory, there's also CPU and Disk. Hogging any of those can bring your PC to a crawl.

The issue is only present in Adobe products. My computer is greased lightning everywhere else.

Try this:
Prior to opening any Adobe apps, open Task Manager in the "Processes" view. Click on the heading of the Memory column, this will sort the list of processes by memory usage.
Now, before opening an Adobe app, what is the percent memory usage?
Go ahead and open Ps, watch its memory usage.
Once it is open:
1.) What is the percent memory usage now?
2.) How much memory is Ps reported to be using? On my work 'pooter, it's about 1338 MB, for reference

Lucky I have small files and modest editing needs ...

Before Adobe 21% with my normal tabs open
Added LR, rose to 26%
Added PS (one image), rose to 46%

Additional info: When I open an image from LR to PS, there is a very significant lag. All PS processes also have lag.

ETA+
Memory usage is now 51%, and I haven't touched either LR or PS since my last ETA.

Memory: 3,460 MB

Finally, I'm using the Beta version - that's what opens when I ctrl+e from LR.

I will try opening regular PS.

ETA that I opened regular PS (no image, just opened the program) and it shoots up to 44%

Well those numbers are not unusual given the amount of installed RAM you have. I'm thinking that your issues may not lie with paging to disk, but there is another thing we need to do...
Keep Task Manager Open to the Perfromance screen while working in Lr/Ps and watch what happens during times when there is excessive lag... specifically, do you see disk use rising really significantly? An occasional spike is OK, but if it pegs near fully utilization, that is excessive paging. Also keep an eye on memory usage, to see if it spikes, and CPU usage as well.

I have been. Performance seems stable. It seems to spike when I save an image. The baseline went up a bit for awhile, then spiked a little when I shut down PS. Now it's back down to 3%.

But memory crept up and was at 84%. I was working on a few images in PS, and even though I was closing them as I finished them, the % wasn't going down.

I don't know how tech savvy you are, but you can try running procmon.exe while loading and running PS/LR.
There's a lot of info there, but it'll probably be gibberish if you don't know what you're looking at.

Probably not savvy enough to understand/use said tool.
