See if you can find "Ospho" at a paint store. It's mostly phosphoric acid, but it will take off minor rust, and stop the heavier rust. There are several other brands of similar chemical. Look for the phosphoric acid on the label. It goes on like water, and later turns sort of white after it dries and works overnight. It can be painted over. When it's liquid, it will bleach some paints. Be sure to wear rubber gloves if you use it. It burns if you get it under your nails. It can be painted on, or sprayed on with a pump bottle. It's tough on copper and wires, so keep it away from connectors and open wire like the ground wire on the alternator in your photo.
A wire "cup brush" on a 4" grinder works wonders for cast parts like the calipers and on pipes, threads, sheet metal ect. If you haven't used one before, be careful because it also burns if you get it under your nails. Wear safety glasses for both Ospho, because it's corrosive, and the grinder, which can sling out a few of the brush wires at bullet speed.

Naval Jelly is good too, just keep it out of your navel.

I'd suggest using some Topaz adjust on it.

My advice is to go ...

Just a fun fyi here, I spent years rebuilding 60's Chevrolet muscle cars with my dad, I realize I'm not a super expert, but, really, I do know a thing or two about cars as well as cameras, they're not exclusive to one another...
