It has been about 8 months since I last posted in this thread. On May 23 I will be officially done with my 8 year obligation in the Army. That is if I don't get mobilized first. And there is certainly the possibility for that, my unit is on the list for Iraq. I've been deployed before to Bosnia, but I don't want to get called up a month away from my ETS. Anyway, I was also stationed 5 years in Europe, 2 in Belgium and 3 in Italy. I've decided to get out to finish college and start a new career.

Served in US Army Signal Corps 1969-1971. Viet Nam service 1970, 269th Signal, 1st Signal Brigade, attached to South Vietnamese III Corps Army Headquarters and at USAF Air Base, Bien Hoa, Viet Nam. I have the highest regard for all veterans, but was also against the war...... Viet Nam Veterans against the War.

While I'm not in the Service, I do research for the Army. I'm at Fort Rucker, affectionately known as 'Mother', where pretty much all the helicopter students come for their training. They're a bit touchy about photos on the base, so I've been trying to see what else there is to photograph in Southern Alabama [answer: not too much!].

Take care

LOL, but no. When I graduated tech school, I put California and Alaska on my stateside Wish-List, and Italy and Germany for overseas. I got my first stateside choice - California. A couple of years later rotation time came around and several of my buddies went to Vietnam and I and a couple of others went to Alaska. I don't know if the 'Nam guys screwed up or the AK guys did, but I'm just as glad that I didn't end up in 'Nam. I'm happy to say that they all returned safely, as did those of us who went to Alaska. The big difference is that the 'Nam guys were dodging real artillary in the tropics, while I and my DEW line comrades were playing war games with the Russians in the artic. We DID have a cook who ended up on our site because he burned the commander's turkey the previous Thanksgiving, so Alaska duty WAS sometimes viewed as "punishment".
Actually, since I was in a somewhat mobile squadron, I didn't spend a lot of time in the smog at Norton. As I said, we covered the 11 Western States and spent most of the time doing installations at other sites.

I spent seven years in the USAF (1963-1970). Most of it teaching at Lowry AFB in Denver, CO. Did do a year's duty on Easter Island where I photographed every square inch of it.

I was in the US Navy 1992-1996 onboard USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72). I worked on the flight deck and seen a lot of crap go down. I guess my high point of any combat that I saw or was envolved with has to be Somalia. The movie "Blackhawk Down" is what that was about, however in the movie, it didn't show a whole lot of air support. There was, and I saw them fly over and made drops and could hear the bombings, even out at sea at night. It was Clintons Navy back then and I will never forget the many changes that took place. Women on board a combat ships for one, that was the best thing I can remember. It lowered some testosterone levels and made drinking much more fun in the desert. But thats another story. ;) I have been everywhere, (wished that I had my camera then, missed a lot of great photo-journalist ops) but mainly I was in the Gulf...it's was hot and it sucked. But now, not complaining at all. I miss it for some strange reason. However, I salute you all that are in uniform and may God be with you. GO NAVY!!!! or a least go and clean a Head or something. :)

U.S. Air Force, 1962-1967. GEEIA ( Ground Electronics Engineering and Installation Agency ). Worked the 11 Western States out of Norton, AFB, San Bernardino, CA - installed & maintained ground RADAR equipment, Flight Simulators, etc.. Then spent a delightful year on the DEW ( Distant Early Warning ) Line in beautiful Kotzebue, AK - a little spit of land 90 miles north of Nome. Finished out my tour of duty in St. Albans, VT.

I served in the U.S. Army from 1970 - 1973, as a Russian linguist while stationed in Germany. This was during the height of the Viet Nam conflict. I was against the war at that time - but thought it wise (and I suppose good...) to serve in some way. I had been a foreign language major in college, and saw an opportunity to expand my skills.

The best and most initimate friendships I've had were those made while in the service.

Aubrey,

I was in transit in Rota for a couple weeks while I was waiting for my ship, USS Forrestal CVA-59, to arrive in Majorca. You're right, I loved Rota, and the people were just awsome! Majorca was very nice too. Then I boarded the ship and the party was over (well most of it anyway. ;^))

Is Kinville still outside Camp Hansen? I spent 2 weeks there at the rifle range, 2 weeks at NBC school, and 2 weeks on OP Sue. That was all in 1980, and I'm retired now.

I was not in the service long enough to take away from all the brave folks in this thread. Now I'm embarrased a little about my very short term of service and wonder what if...

However, the reason I'm posting now is because of my brother who is active duty Army National Guard (GO GUARD) MP in Iraq. I'm damn proud of him and his unit!
