The folks over at Shifting Baselines (//www.shiftingbaselines.org/) have launched a photo contest -- you can send in your photos illustrating the concept of "shifting baselines" and you can win a first prize of $500, second prize of $250, or third prize of $100.
Here's what they mean by illustrating "shifting baselines":
Shifting baselines is about change -- "things ain't what they used to be, "you shoulda seen it when." It's also about the unfortunate acceptance of change -- people having a fun day at a filthy beach, fishermen catching tiny fish. They've got some background on the contest on their blog, as well.

I visited your photo contest page and noticed that your second listing is 'Open Amateur Photography Contest' which links to the site www.'picture.com' . This seems to be a 'scam' site! A few months ago, I submitted a photo to this site and recieved nothing but solicitations asking for money AND an exciting announcement that I was one of the finalists (asking for money -- everyone recieves this letter). If you google the keywords ''picture.com'' and ''scam'' you can find hundreds of posts talking about this site. I suggest you remove it from your great page.

Thanks platy123,
Please do not mis understand what I am about to say. It is not meant to be rude or confrontational ... it just is.
I do know that it leads to 'picture.com' and I DO KNOW that many people consider this to be a 'scam'. However ... legally it is not a 'scam'. This has been checked out every which way by legal authorities in both states and provinces. It passes muster.
It is a business, just like many of the other photo contests and writing contests are businesses. There are loads of people who simply want to have their photo published. These are the same people that enter contests that take away all their rights. I have more of a problem with rights grabbing than with anything else.
I think that what many people don't really understand is that most companies, and organizations do not run contests or sweepstakes out of the goodness of their hearts. Their pocket books are almost always involved in some way.
It becomes up to the person entering the contest to figure out what that is.
*Nikon runs photo contests because it sells Nikon cameras.
*Many contests collect all their money up front by charging you a fee to enter.
*Photo Life runs contests because it sells magazines.
*online voting contests ... often do this to drive traffic to their websites, the traffic converts into dollars.
The Shifting BaseLine Photo contest is designed to get publicity for what I think is a worthy group of folks. For $850 dollars they get to generate a whole boatload of publicity in newspapers, magazines and on other websites like mine. Simply the fact that the contest exists introduced me to this organization. I read the articles they wanted me to read. Hmmmmmmm
When I first started putting up all the contest listings I used to AGONIZE about some contests. I ended up asking my CONTEST NEWS newsletter subscribers for their views. I decided that my site is a resource that lists contests. I cannot be the gatekeeper over what is good and what is bad. AS long as it is a legitimate contest I run it.
Given that ... I occasionally break my own rules. Take a look at the very bottom of my photo contest page. That contest made me mad. However, my visitors still have the right to click on the link and enter it, if they wish, in spite of my warnings.
So ... what I'm going to do is ADD a NOTE into the 'picture.com' contest and give people links to several articles about "vanity publishing" sites.
Thanks for your comments!!

Ever heard the saying - "If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it's a duck" ? I don't see how you can consider 'Picture.com' a "legitimate contest". Does your website receive money from them?
I do like your site, and especially your awareness about "rights grabbing". Many photographers overlook this aspect of a contest's fine print rules. Your site does a valuable service for the likes of us here at dpc and it is appreciated. I just think you got it wrong on 'picture.com'. Keep up the good work. |
