I am currently using an iMac for my photo editing but the glossy screen is useless and I can't seem to get it calibrated properly. So I think I need to just go ahead and buy a second monitor to attach to it. So please help. I plan in getting it at best buy as that is pretty much the only store around here. So what size should I get? What all do I need to look at and does anyone know if best buy calibrates monitors or if I should just buy software for that. Any advice is greatly appreciated, I didn't see any current posts on monitors and seeing as how technology changes so quickly I thought it best to do a new thread.

Order it from tiger direct //www.tigerdirect.com .

For value - the 28" I-Inc can't be beat.. I own three right now, and am planning on getting more.

But look around, there's lots of options...

Also, on this point - no-one calibrates monitors, and software does a poor job... You'll need a hardware calibration unit if you want to be perfectly accurate...

For that matter, you might also want a wide-gamut, professional graphics monitor, but that'll set you back well into the 4-figure range..

Obviously LED provides better (more even) illumination, etc, etc...

However... Nothing of that sort will be at Best Buy. You will have to order on-line. Also note that Tiger will carry equipment that is equal to or better than what you can find at Best Buy..

I have the Eizo Flexscan 2243w and calibrates it now and then with a Spyderpro. Fantastic quality. I was on a seminar with a guy from Eizo. Two things he said that I rembers quite well.

"Don't complain about an expensive monitor if you have thousands of dollars in equipment"

and

"It costs waaay more to make a high quality 24" monitor than 22"." Something about that cheaper monitors tend to get darker in the corners, a bit like vigneting.
The tech for making a "perfect" 24" was therefor very expensive. 22" is more than enough for me. If I work vertical, I just flip my screen. If I need bigger space, I have the editing tools on my old monitor and a seperate window for the image in postprod.

Thanks for the quick reply. Yeah I did mean to say calibration hardware and speaking of which do you have any suggestions of a good one?

So I will be looking for a led monitor and calibration hardware, any suggestions on contrast ratio or other specs?

I might look into wide gamut monitors if I were you... Although, that could prove to be a problem with DPC, since you'll be seeing a different output.

Wide gamut is really great for print, perhaps less-so for the web...

In response to BJokerud's comment about cheaper monitors having falloff like vignetting, it's true, they do, but it's usually more towards the center of the monitor, rather than the corner.

It boils down to what your eyes are comfortable looking at. How far you sit from the screen. Lighting in the room your going to be using it etc etc... Go to Best Buy and check out what they have...
