What about an anything goes challenge where any sort of graphic art is allowed?

We do have something like that now... it's called Free Study.

If I'm reading this right, it would be a free study type challenge with expert editing. Correct?

I mean combining elements from different images, whatever. No holds barred sort of thing.

In general, it's the philosophy of the people who run this site that there are plenty of places on the 'net where you can do exactly what you're talking about, but very few that offer what DPC does: a passionate interest in straight, relatively conservative photography-as-photography. We do have occasional expert editing challenges (look at the Movie Posters, currently under voting, for the most recent example), but it's not something we see a lot of.

That challenge is what made me think of it.

I wouldn't suggest it be done often, or even more than once. Just seems like it would add an interesting dimension
