Is the Canon 24-70mm f2.8 usm a good all around walk around lens? |

It's a little long for your crop-sensor camera. 24mm wouldn't be wide enough for me. By a long shot. It's a great walkaround lens on the full frame cameras though.

Well, that's good then. Probably your ideal walkaround lens on the crop sensor is something like the 18-135mm, which goes from reasonably wide to reasonably telephoto. Mostly people want a "walkaround" to do a little bit of everything, so they can leave the kit at home or in the car and just roam with an all-purpose lens. But there are whole other schools of thought, that a walkaround should be a prime lens, for example.
Certainly, the 24-70mm is an excellent piece of glass. It will fit well next to your 10-20mm. And of course there's the 24-105mm to consider as well... :-)

Sorry to interrupt this, question for Bear_Music: Would that lens be good for portraits on a 5D Mark II?

It's a little wide. For traditional portraiture, anyway, which would start at around 50mm on the FF camera and run up to, say, 105mm or so. On anything but full length shots, 70-100mm would be considered normal I think. But I'm not a portrait expert. And it'd work fine from, say, 40-70mm I'm sure. And wider if you're into the exaggerated stuff.

FWIW; I exchanged my 24-70 2.8 for the 24-105 f4. The latter is an excellent walk-around lens for me and will do the most on a FF camera. It's every bit as sharp as the 24-70. The only difference is the extra F stop which has little practical effect on the 5dm2 and its excellent ISO characteristics.
Having had both lenses I would get the 24-105 in a heart beat.
Canon 24-105mm f/4L IS vs. Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L
ETA: keep in mind that the above comparison at the Luminous Landscape was done with a camera with not nearly as goos noise characteristics is yours.
