Bump to see if yakatme is up and if he has wore out the update button today. How you doing over there?

What did you do? What did you do? This is the first time this week that my score has dropped.

Just kidding, although I am disappointed that it came down a bit in the last half hour. How is your score doing?

Ouch! I'll get to see what the competition has been in about two and a half minutes.

See you on the other side. Good luck.

5.3333 and 21 comments. The most for me during a challenge.

LOL well I'm glad I gave you something to shoot for all week. Had I known there were only a few up in that area I would not have been posting my scores!

I don't want to step on toes here but I really don't see a whole lot of a difference between these two images, why did MattO's finish 2nd and whiteflyer's finish 11th.

If you voted on these photos what was it that made one better than the other???

Festus is a cooler word than Stadia. duh!

And so it starts.

Here are some more contrasts. Her face and arms show determination. His posture is reminiscent of Peter Pan.

Do you really have to go here? If so, then why? What's your point? That this is a conspiracy?

I think the biggest difference is that the hurdler in the first image engages the viewer whereas the second one doesn't.

cpanaioti beat me to it. The model in the first image is closer to making an eye contact with the viewer than in the second image. Also, the form of the model in the first image is better, her right leg is pointing straight into the lens.

In all fairness though, the second image got 1 mark more from me.. go figure:-)

As a sports photographer, to me there are many differences in the two that make or break the photo. The first being the form of the two hurdlers, the timing of the shot, one at the peak the other ever so slightly after it. As others have stated the eye contact makes a huge difference in the shot, as well as the lighting on the face.

I know the athletes of the county and know this young lady is one of the top performers in her events. I know her form is nearly perfect at every hurdle and her jumps are consistent making my only job to time the click of the shutter. That is the reason I chose to photograph her while out on assignment with the idea of using it in this challenge.

Great shot.

Out of curiosity, Matt, was there a reason behind not keeping the athlete in perfect center of the frame? Were you aiming to use the edges of the hurdle as the guidelines?

I voted MattO's shot one point higher and the reason for that was the look and determination on her face as well as the framing of the hurdles. Now if anyone cares to guess why my shot finished so much lower then I thought it would I would appreciate that.

I was working for the paper when this image was shot. I knew her race was coming up and had decided to shoot her race knowing how well she performs. While waiting for this heat to come up I was photographing, Pole Vault, Triple Jump, and Long jump. Somehow I missed one heat and I looked over and her race was ready to take the gun. I was well out of position and had to scramble to get at least head on, but was no where near my normal shooting position. Here is the original that that is cropped from. when I started cropping I liked the fact that she was a bit off center which is normal for her running style, she tends to stay to the right side of the lane her lead leg comes over close to center, so its a good representation of her style of running. I figured everyone centers the runner, or at least tries to, I'll do something different.

To see her run you would think that many times. Knowing your sport and it's athletes has a big advantage when you can expect them to perform it makes your job as a photographer a lot easier.
